Dr James Muecke AM is our 2020 Australian of the Year for his work as an eye surgeon over many decades restoring sight for thousands of people globally.
His non-profit organisation Sight For All educates both patients and opthalmic/optometric health practitioners in countries around the world and has seen a correlative rise of poor eye health with Type 2 Diabetes.
This led Dr Muecke to investigate the causal factors behind Type 2 Diabetes which he now considers to be a 'largely preventable and potentially reversible man-made lifestyle disease'. He places the blame at the feet of insane consumption levels of fructose, with a secondary contributor industrial seed oils, causing inflammation and damage throughout bodily systems manifesting early and clearly in the delicate structure of the eye.
He is a campaigner for 'Awareness, Accountability and Assistance' around the exploding Type 2 Diabetes epidemic globally.

A disturbing reality has emerged after Sydney's protests. Previously compassionate friends, family and colleagues have summoned their inner 'Mr Hydes' to now wish upon thousands of people: death, incarceration without trial, sickness, accidents and economic destruction.
Incensed by what they perceive as a gross act of injustice (protesting during a pandemic and lockdown and thus placing Sydneysiders at increased risk) they have reversed the axiom 'execute justice but love mercy'. They execute mercy but love justice.
Taste the vitriol pouring forth from the very same mouths who ordinarily profess compassion and mercy (whether by their religion, or their secular big-heartedness). They have abandoned their principles!
But they are not evil. Their hypocrisy arises from confusing the verbs 'execute' [justice] and 'love' [mercy].
We are not called to 'love' justice. And we shouldn't - every society that truly 'loves' justice pursues it with a rigour that casts aside mercy as a weak and inconvenient impediment. Which is odd, considering our society's desire to clothe itself in the most virtuous causes possible: compassion, equality, acceptance, and understanding.
Such is society's desire for virtue that we legislate compassion, we erect statues and buildings to equality, we valorise and enforce cultures of acceptance and mercy, but then we discard actions of justice where it competes with mercy. Because 'love trumps hate', 'mercy over justice' or [insert some other platitude here].
So we 'execute' or 'do' mercy, whilst 'loving' justice. It is a disastrous reversal that perhaps feels good for those indulging therein but ultimately it delivers a twisted world where justice is diluted for whatever fleeting wave of righteousness fills our fickle human hearts in that season.
Instead, imagine a world where justice is executed. Always. Where corruption is sidelined. Where courts, police and communities never shy away from doing the right thing. Ever.
But those same courts, police and communities love mercy. They prefer mercy. They look for mercy within the justice. Their hearts are filled with compassion as they execute justice.
This would satisfy the twin hungers of the human heart: for justice to always prevail, but for mercy to always rule.

Alex Washburne has undergraduate degrees in biology and applied mathematics from University of New Mexico and a PhD from a Princeton University studying competition in ecological, epidemiological, and economic systems. He’s actively researched COVID epidemiology, the economic impacts of pandemic policy, and stock + capital market responses to epidemiological news.
In this interview we explored:
Covid-19 policy monism in a world of plurality
How decentralisation and competition can create better solutions
The strangling of new ideas by powerful incumbants
The desire to kill anything that is 'not the same' as you
The intolerance of some scientific fields
Predictions of endemicity and profitable stocks

All around the world we have seen pandemic readiness plans scrapped as somehow, we've embraced the Wuhan (and the Italian) model of snap lockdowns to suppress and eliminate COVID-19.
Politicians seem in a race to copy one another, with reasoning shifting from:
'two weeks to flatten the curve'
to
'keep our ICU beds available'
to
'even 1 death is too many'
to
'we must keep case numbers low'
to
'we must run this to ground (0 cases)'
to most recently in Victoria Australia:
'it's about the number of exposure sites and potential upstream cases we don't know about'.

Only wealthy corporates can afford to wade into the dangerous waters of social justice issues. Economist Darren Nelson calls it 'monopoly profits' that allow only large organisations to indulge in virtue whereas small and medium businesses focus on survival and delivering value to their customers.

Here's a revelation: perhaps we are all religious. As a dedicated utilitarian, even Professor Gigi Foster admits to religious unctions in her secular behaviour.
Certainly we are seeing a 'religious' response from the lockdown zealots and authoritarian supporters (in the name of health and safety of course).
Maybe we need to confront the awkward truth that when you boot religion out of society, even people like Sam Harris don't end up on a purely secular path. Witness how they slip back into religious behaviour when the pressure is on.
So what is the solution? Many advocate a return to the religious ways, beliefs and worldviews of old.
I advocate for simply the admission that even the most secular human will eventually behave in religious, non-rational ways, and so we must not base our political, economic, psychological or scientific calculations on the rational phenotype of a human.
We must accept and prepare for their irrational, quasi-religious tendencies. Even 'rational self interest' is not the perfectly reliable framework we believe it to be. People often act to their own detriment.

It's now painfully obvious that health outcomes in states like Victoria, Australia and California, USA are very similar to supposedly 'reckless' states like NSW, Australia and Florida, USA despite radical differences in government policies.
On balance, Australian leaders have achieved substantially the same result for their populations 'keeping them safe' and so it can only be political theatre that praises any of them for a good result.
We know their policies caused harm, but the public accepted them because of the supposed benefits balanced against those harms.
But what if their harmful policies didn't actually save anyone? What if premieres and Prime Minister were pretending to be in control of a virus that they never could control?
