Early last month, a group of ten Portlanders with mobility disabilities sued the city over tents blocking the sidewalks. The lawsuit claims the city is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Federal Rehabilitation Act.
The lawyers behind the lawsuit recently found Multnomah County’s Joint Office of Homeless Services gave 6,550 tents and 27,000 tarps to people experiencing homelessness in 2021. The lawyers are now arguing those tents could be the ones making it nearly impossible for people with mobility disabilities to safely navigate the sidewalks.

In a dramatic pivot, Oregon Governor Kate Brown has signed a bill reinstating criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of hard drugs, marking a significant reversal of the state's previous liberal drug policy initiated in 2020. The initial approach, inspired by models like Portugal's, sought to decriminalize hard drugs and redirect marijuana tax revenue to addiction services. However, this policy faced criticism as addiction and overdose rates soared, notably from fentanyl, prompting bipartisan legislative efforts to roll back these measures. Despite the reversal, concerns linger over the effectiveness of re-criminalization and its impact on drug-related tourism and societal damage already inflicted. Critics argue that without adequate addiction services and support systems, simply changing the legal status of drug possession may not address the root causes of the crisis.

Seattle firefighters are demanding action after first responders faced 40 assaults in four months in homeless encampments as crime continues to surge.
Former Seattle firefighter Andy Pittman joined "Fox & Friends First" to discuss why the trend has worsened and how the assaults have impacted the force's morale.
"It's largely because there is no consequence for anything of this nature in Seattle," Pittman told co-host Todd Piro. "They know that with the reduced number of police in the city after last year's [vaccine] mandate and the continued decline in morale, that they get to write their own playbook and do as they wish."

Starbucks has decided to close seven of its locations in San Francisco's downtown and Financial District areas, which also happen to be near the notorious Tenderloin neighborhood. This move is part of the company's "portfolio evaluation," but who are we kidding? It's clear that Starbucks can no longer tolerate the increasing mishaps in the vicinity, from rampant theft to chaotic disruptions. Making a strategic pivot, Starbucks is now focusing on takeout-only models, resembling prison-like service through small holes in a wall. It's a sad but necessary measure to shield their customers and staff from the madness just beyond the glass.
Is San Francisco's downtown really becoming a ghost town? With a staggering 33.9% office vacancy rate, there's not much foot traffic to support local businesses. The Tenderloin area, infamous for its disarray, adds another layer of complexity. Sure, you could grab a grande macchiato, but at what risk? Starbucks is merely the canary in the coal mine, signaling the city's overall decline. But not to worry, Starbucks assures no employees will be laid off—they'll simply be relocated to less perilous zones.

When the volunteer-run organization Anything Helps, headed by a man who said he could do homeless encampment outreach better, approached Seattle Public Schools this summer and offered to end an encampment outside Broadview-Thompson K-12, the school district agreed.
The district was under pressure from people in the surrounding Bitter Lake neighborhood to remove the 60-plus-person encampment, and had argued with the city of Seattle for much of the past year about whose responsibility it was and how it should be done.
The school district didn’t devote much money to the effort, and the offer from Anything Helps was appealing because of its price tag: The district thought it would only be paying the costs associated with getting people inside. The group’s leader, Mike Mathias, who used to be homeless himself, and his volunteer team were all unpaid. The district ultimately reimbursed him for more than $20,000 for those costs.

Allegations of Southern California hotels employing migrant workers to replace striking staff have recently come to light. Not shocking, if you ask me. What's truly eyebrow-raising is the naive surprise some people are showing. Sanctuary cities like Los Angeles practically roll out the red carpet for migrant workers who, let's be honest, are more than willing to take up the tough, less glamorous jobs that others shy away from. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office has even launched an investigation into working conditions at these hotels. What's next, a probe into why the sky is blue? The kicker here is that it’s not just the hotels, but the union workers themselves who should've seen this coming. When you declare yourself a sanctuary city, it's like sending an open invitation to replace the existing labor force. Wake up, America.
Union members are on strike, and guess who's filling their shoes? Migrant workers, some of whom are alleged to be minors, are clocking in for hard labor and accepting under-the-table cash payments. If this doesn't scream 'welcome to reality,' I don’t know what does. Let’s not pretend that this is a shocking revelation. It’s more like a sitcom where everyone except the lead character knows the punchline. The District Attorney's office is now working with the state labor department to investigate 'potential wage theft,' among other infractions. It's almost as if the officials have finally decided to deal with a problem they helped create. Isn't life just a hoot?

Retail giant Target has announced the closure of nine stores in several major cities, attributing the decision to escalating violence, theft, and organized retail crime. Yes, you read that right. Unlike other companies tip-toeing around the topic with PR-friendly language about "optimizing store locations" or "redeveloping retail footprint," Target candidly stated that their stores are closing because employees, vendors, and shoppers are not safe. It's as if common sense prevailed for a moment, and Target laid it all out there, citing a $500 million hit to their profitability due to lost or stolen inventory. The company even warned that some communities can't afford to spare the cops for extra security. How's that for progress in our so-called progressive cities?
Target isn't the only one making such bold moves; CVS is also closing 900 stores over the next three years, for similar reasons. Locations affected include Harlem, Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, and Portland—notice any patterns there? Sure, some say it's shocking, but is it really? The prevailing lack of safety and the erosion of law and order have made these decisions inevitable. So the next time you wonder why your favorite store in a bustling area is shutting down, perhaps consider the shopping spree some patrons are indulging in—just not the kind that benefits the store's bottom line.

Calls for help are sometimes meeting long delays as the city’s 911 system finds itself understaffed and overwhelmed.
It is a potentially critical collapse in Seattle's public safety net and it could be months before the problem is solved. Until then, a balancing act is underway to better prioritize emergency calls.
For every call taker who fills a chair at Seattle’s Community Safety and Communications Center, there is an empty seat right next to the person. Chris Lombard, the department’s interim director, said more than half the call taker positions are currently vacant.
“We were not able to hire and train as fast as we were losing people all summer long,” Lombard said.

Seattle City Attorney Ann Davidson sent a request to the Seattle Municipal Court asking that frequent offenders who meet the criteria for Davison's High Utilizer Initiative be excluded from Community Court.
Davison's High Utilizer Initiative identified 118 individuals who are responsible for 2,400 criminal cases over the past five years in Seattle, according to a release from her office. Each person identified has 12 or more referrals from the Seattle Police Department to the City Attorney's Office within the past five years, and at least one referral in the past eight months.
