Jesus sat down and shared with us His disciples the facts of earthly life. That’s how I describe the Sermon on the Mount. The Facts of Earthly Life Those chapters contained Jesus explaining the basics of salvation, prayer, relational dynamics, and earthly treasures. We’ve studied the prayer portion at length, as well as the salvation portion. But the treasure lesson is what we’ll see today. Look at Mt. 6:19-24. “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and riches (Greek word mamonas). Jesus told us clearly that materialism, or the craving for the things riches can buy, first enslaves our hearts (v.19-21); then it takes captive our minds (v. 22-23), and finally conquers our will (v. 24): Either we lay up treasures in Heaven that can never be lost (Mt. 6:19-21); Or we clutter our life on Earth with things & lose our treasures in Heaven. There is no middle ground Jesus said. We can’t serve two masters (Mt. 6:24). Peter heard those facts from Jesus in person. He chose to act on what Christ said. Peter Never Forgot As we open to 2 Peter 3, we are opening into a final session Peter had with the growing churches he had poured his life into. They were now scattered across the heart of the Roman Empire. They were facing both fiery trials and glittering allurements. They were torn between loyalty to Christ and painful persecutions, or floating along with the world and its endless pursuits of pleasure and possessions. Peter’s congregation sounds eerily similar to the church in America, of the 21st Century. Are You Floating or Fighting? Each of us as followers of Christ has been commissioned by Him to spend our lives going and sharing the Gospel. For most of us sitting in this clean, comfortable, well-lit church auditorium, surrounded by hundreds of believers, that sounds very reasonable. But, what would you think about being invited to share the Gospel with a group of hardened sinners? Would you really believe down deep, that there was hope for them? Yes, we should because: The Power of the Gospel is Real But would you feel as confident if you knew those hardened sinners in your audience were actually two thousand antagonistic, gang members who: • All have killed in cold-blooded murder, with their own hands, at least one person (and then went on to eat the dead body); • All are presently, actively involved in some form of deep, black, Satanic witchcraft; • All have both a heavy drinking and drug addiction history; and • All are addicted to living in some form of sexual perversion; either incest, pedophilia, adultery, or fornication. Also added to the audience will be several hundred unwed mothers, plus countless divorced and unfaithful women, as well as some legions of hardened children who live in those broken homes. If You Believe Right You will Behave Right Believers who are grounded upon the right beliefs about God and His truths to live by will not be swept away by false teachers, false teachings, the changing circumstances of life, or even the alluring tug of sin. If we believe right, we will behave right. Wrong behavior is always tied to some lack of faith-prompted obedience to God's Word. So Paul prescribed “sound doctrine” as the tool to shape a generation of former pagans now gathering in house churches around the island of Crete. What exactly is “sound doctrine”? Sound, healthy, or godly doctrine usually has four clear identifying marks:  it comes from the Bible,  it centers upon Jesus Christ,  it produces the right behavior, and  it promotes spiritual growth, touching the heart and changing life, not just the intellect. Today’s men have the same challenges that those of Crete faced two thousand years ago. The sins, temptations, and pressures of all ages in the past have not changed—they are just compounded by the speed at which they travel toward us. Sin is sin, the world is the world, and the devil and his demons are not omnipresent—but, the exposure of modern men to media that carries sin-filled ideas, pointed temptations, and Satan’s worldly desires are nearly omnipresent. And all that media comes to men that are generally more stressed out than any other generation, partly because of information overload. We have too many choices in life, too many sources of information, and too many facts to digest, coming in ever-increasing waves so that we have neither the time nor resources to respond. That produces the modern societal phenomenon called “stress”. If you belong to Jesus, then He wants you to know two things: These are the things that please Him. These are the things that don’t please Him. Whether you read on or not, you are responsible for whether or not your life is pleasing to God. Whether you’re aware of what pleases God and what doesn’t, Jesus will chasten you as His child until you are in line with His Word. We are responsible to hear God speak through His Word. We are responsible to obey it. No excuses, no exemptions. We’re about to dive into Christ’s messages to the seven churches, His rebukes, His chastening, and the scourging He inflicts when His people ignore His warnings. We will see what God loves in His people, and we’ll see what He hates. This isn’t a take-it-or-leave-it proposition. This is the Christian life, and no one gets to skip Part 2 of Jesus’ plan. He will perfect us until we are pure and spotless, ready to present to Him in heaven. Are you ready? Precious Jesus, there is nothing more important to us than to live a life that is pleasing to You. We look forward to the day when You return for Your bride, when we are finally presented spotless and wrinkle-free, but until that day, let us heed Your gentle word of rebuke when You speak to us as sons, and, like You told the Ephesians, the Pergamites, the Thyatirans, and the believers at Sardis and Laodicea, let us repent immediately and live as Your slave. May we be known by Your name. May we hold our possessions with open hands knowing they belong to You, and may we set aside our own plans in favor of Yours. Thank You for Your Word.
