Winded Voyage 3 | Episode 30 | Sailing Around Tenerife Island lll
Our last leg of our circumnavigation of Tenerife island ends climactically! Weather predictions don't say much about crazy wind effects near the coastline, and we got thrashed. It makes for good content when I was able to shoot in-between gales. It started off as being an easy sail until we got broadsided by Mother Nature's wrath.

We were underway. Just me and Galopin. This would be my first long solo passage. I felt I needed this challenge. To get to know myself and my boat. Being alone puts you more in touch with your environment. Your reality. It’s just you, your boat and the ocean. It can be a psychological challenge to be out there alone for several days.

We make new friends and go out sailing on my yacht Galopin in perfect Cape Verdean conditions. Anchor and get ambushed by wet bikes. Then we take a 90ft. steel luxury sailing yacht and sail in the mighty waters of Mindelo Bay. A completely different sailing experience sailing a 90ft yacht.

Peter and I sail to Santiago island accompanied by Lily on his boat and Wendy on mine. We're buddy sailing in Cape Verde Africa, two yachts sailing together 140NM. After a short delay we are off down the Sao Vicente canal and it's glorious. We catch up and sail together the beginning of our 160nm passage. Poor Wendy is very seasick, but gets a momentary cure as we are surrounded by speedy dolphins. It's one of those wonderful Cape Verde cruising moments. One I hope you'll enjoy as much as we did, apart from the seasickness.

Adele and I sail through traffic on our approach into Dakar. The girl gets off Galopin and we say good bye. She was great to have aboard. And the boat goes up on the beach. I'll be living up there for a few days. It's kinda of weird. Not for all cruisers, but great for me and Galopin.

No reservations, no plans where to stay. So we became village crashers. In fact two lovely families let us crash in their home. Cape Verdeans are some of the most friendly, generous and hospitable people. We got an idea of how they live. It's different than what I'm used to and refreshing. We then get a look at another part of this most incredible island of Santa Antao.

I'm no Anthony Bourdain, but this episode has some of his style because it is about discovering Cape Verde through food, drink, music and its people. My journey is about discovery. And here we discover a side of Cape Verde that is real. Some may say this is not about sailing. It is not. It's about travelling.

It's about time to say goodbye, but before that I have to do a couple of things. One fish out a camera I dropped to the bottom of the marina, and it's deep. Then I get a real look at life with real island natives. My friends Ivan & Anna. Something I've been wanting to do since I got here in Tenerife for the past several month. It was worth the wait.

One of the main reasons I came back to Dakar Senegal was to get my sails repaired and more. I do not have the budget to simply order new sails. Here people don’t just replace things, they fix things. I was impressed by Diego the sailmaker's professionalism and savoir faire. Diego has decades of experience, the materials and a family to feed. As well, I like to see and feel where my modest earnings go to. My philosophy is to do what I do best and let others do what they do best. Me I sail, travel and make videos. And meet people as you will see in this episode.

This episode takes place in Cartagena Spain. It was a destination I’d been hoping to get to from my frigid days in France and made it to Yacht Port Cartagena in the dark of night. I was also there at the right time, it was Semana Santa or Easter Week. Cartagena was reputed to be a sight to see, and it is. They have very interesting religious processions parading through the streets. Prepare yourselves to watch something unexpected. The other cool thing about Cartagena was that the marina ambiance is the best of my travels so far. As you’ll see, I meet lots of good people there.
