So yesterday our little chipmunk was released. He went in and out of the release enclosure a few times. Then explored the wood pile. We will continue to provide housing and food for him until he is ready to fully be on his own. Definitely difficult to say goodbye to this little cutie.

The story of how our latest fawn came to be here is so heart wrenching. Thankfully MORE kind people CARED and ACTED!
Mama deer was trying to get baby to cross a raging creek. She walked across and back a time or two, but baby - SMARTLY - said "umm...no, i'm a baby and I can't make that crossing"...but mama insisted (mama must not have had her thinking cap on) and finally she abandoned baby and left. Baby screamed and screamed for mama but mama never came back. Eventually baby was so terrified and so hungry, she decided to brave the raging creek....and was quickly swept away down stream.
The kind people who lived in the home on the edge of the creek had been monitoring the situation for the whole day and sprung into action, racing downstream following the baby. When they finally got to a place where baby was up against some rocks with water rushing over her - they were able to get in there and grab her.
They called us, very upset and desperate for help.
Quickly they arrived with a very vey cold fawn. She was so cold that the inside of her mouth was ice cold and when she urinated her urine was ice cold. We weren't sure we could warm her enough for her to survive.
We did everything we could though and then we added Melrose to the mix. Melrose immediately lay down with her and snuggled up ...providing additional body heat for this little one.
It look like she will make it.
Thank you to everyone who sprung into action to save this little life.
And please - with four fawns we are DESPERATE for formula. They eat every few hours and they eat a LOT. The formula we use is the deer formula from a website called Chris Squirrels and we could really use some help with the purchase of it. It can be pricey! Thank you to all of you for your constant support and kindness and for caring about these little lives.
