We explain the definition of an attribute. An attribute is something special that helps us identify objects or people. The attributes of three-dimensional shapes can be their number of faces, edges, and vertices, or if they have flat or curved surfaces. A surface is a face or side. An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex is a corner. If we have more than one vertex, they are called vertices. A rectangular prism has 6 faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. A cube is a special type of rectangular prism, so it has the same amount of faces, edges, and vertices. If we unfold a rectangular prism, we would be able to see all its faces. We can use dot paper to draw a cube. A cone has a curved surface and a flat surface, and has one edge going around the circle. It has one vertex at the point. A cylinder has circles on the top and bottom. It has a curved surface in between the top and bottom. A sphere is round and it can roll. Its surface is curved. We cannot see all of the edges and vertices at the same time. Dashed lines are used to show the edges and vertices that are hidden. We count the dashed lines as edges. We count where the dashed lines meet as a vertex. We can combine two or more three-dimensional shapes to form new shapes.
