Mansell at McLaren | Round 6: Canadian Grand Prix | Formula 1 (PS1)
In 1995 a legendary driver joined a legendary team when Nigel Mansell signed for McLaren. What seemed like a great move quickly turned into a disaster when Mansell missed the first two races of the season, drove the next two before leaving the team after the Spanish Grand Prix.
But what would have happened if Nigel had made it through the whole season? Well, thanks to Formula 1 on the PS1 from 1996, we can hopefully find out!
Last time out we claimed our first podium of the season with an excellent 2nd place finish at Monaco. In this video we look to keep the momentum building as we travel across the pond to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix.
1997 was a year of change in Formula 1. We had the reigning World Champion racing for a backmarker, a GOAT PS1 game being released which still holds up today, and TWO brand new teams joining the grid in Mastercard Lola and Stewart Grand Prix.
One of these teams was more successful than the other, with Lola burning out so quickly that the didn't make the game...or even start a race! However, for those who don't know, the team we now know as Red Bull Racing got their start on the grid as Stewart Grand Prix all the way back in 1997. Drivers like Jan Magunssen, Johnny Herbert and, yes, Jos Verstappen, walked so Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen could run!
However, despite the advantage they had over their fellow rookie team, Stewart struggled in 1997 with only 8 finishes between both drivers and 9 Double DNFs in 17 races. So, in this series, we try to give Stewart a debut season more befitting of a team that would go on to much bigger and better things in the near and distant future, by taking the one and only Rubens Barrichello through the 1997 season in Formula 1 '97 for the Playstation.
We put in some excellent laps and we're legitimately on provisional pole towards the end of our run, before we got the shock of a high midfield starting place! But we are still in a good place to get some points in this race, at one of my favourite tracks to race so here's hoping for some good luck in this one!

In this video we run through the third race of the season, the San Marino Grand Prix at the legendary Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, better known as Imola. We travel to here looking to shake of a disastrous outing at the Argentine Grand Prix, and hopes are high for scoring another points finish.

We have put ourselves right in the middle of the pack once again but we end up going with a high risk strategy to try and get ourselves in amongst it when it comes to the business end to the race. How well it works will make our decision for us if we are going to try it again - how well did it work? Let's find out!

The penultimate round is the second half of our Japanese double header as we head to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix. We have been fighting at the right end of the grid more often than not in the second half of the season, and coming to the historic and hugely popular Suzuka gives us a great chance for a great result. How good of a result do we get? Let's find out!

After a frustrating qualifying session we have set ourselves a last to first challenge after we found ourselves at the bottom of the timing sheet. We will need some luck and some good driving to make our way through the pack but the Monaco Grand Prix taught us that we have pace in this car, so let's make the best of a bad situation.

Following a frustrating Luxembourg Grand Prix weekend, where we were unlucky to be caught up in a big Lap 2 incident and then a slow pit stop allowing a lot of the cars we were racing to pass us in the pit lane, we head to a fan’s favourite track, Suzuka, for the Japanese Grand Prix.
I think this track could favour us and the car, so I’m quietly confident of something good this weekend!

After an up and down weekend at Imola, we aim to put some of the missed opportunities behind us as we head to the Crown Jewel of the F1 calendar, the Monaco Grand Prix around the streets of Monte Carlo. This was a very successful weekend in the real life 1997 season for Stewart and we are hoping to put ourselves in a good position for the race in this qualifying session.

After what I thought was a great qualifying session, we disappointingly start near the back of the pack. With the track being so high speed, the margins between grid slots are a lot lower than at other tracks so hopefully we can carve our way through the field and get a good finish.

We showed in qualifying that we could piece together some very fast sectors indeed, but unfortunately none were on the same lap. However, we did manage to qualify in 12th so we are right in the thick of it with the teams that we wanted to be competing with at the start of the season, so we are still in a good position. Let's hope that we can get a clean start, and our colleagues behave themselves.......
