We return to the centre of all mindfulness practices. The breath and the awareness of the breath. The body breathes whether we are aware of it or not. From the moment we are born, our breath is the open secret that can tell us what mood or state of mind we are in – if only we were clued in to this part of our life. it connects us to all living things for we all breathe – insects, mammals, trees and all sentient beings. Although it might feel stressful to focus on the breath initially, once we overcome the hurdle of the breath, it can be used to calm and steady our thought process. The breath can be used to tap into our potential and help us work better, study better and heal. The university of California conducted a study that showed that mindfulness breathing increases the capacity to remain alert and present in the moment The next 4 upcoming guided meditations in 40 Steps to Bliss will focus on cultivating a relationship with the breath, a mindful awareness of thoughts, feelings, sensations and interactions during our daily routine. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where someone close called at what you felt was an inappropriate time? Or perhaps a had your weekend plans disrupted by a work emergency? Recall the moment and whether you reacted or responded to the situations. When we pause in those moments and choose to take a few deep breaths, we can slow the heart rate down and respond with a clearer mind, wisdom and empathy. A little practice can take us quite far in these situations. To begin with – stop whatever you are doing – pause and just breathe. Take a few deep slow conscious breaths. Mindfulness of breath is not about controlling the breath but rather about being aware of how we are breathing, which can be the difference between being in a stressed state or a relaxed state. By focusing on how we breath, we are able to develop awareness. Its important to keep this in mind, because we want to always be comfortable and breathe naturally, noticing the changing rhythms. Noticing is the key – just always being aware. As we start this practice the most important part is to be patient with ones self. It takes continuous practice, and is as simple as learning to ride a bicycle, swim or drive. Treat yourself like you would a beloved pet. Remain present, and relaxed. Practice focusing on one breath at a time and build that to being aware of just 3 or 4 breaths. Your mind will wander, and when you notice that, gently return your awareness to the breath. A simple practice that you can do multiple times during the day – retraining the mind towards the art of attention rather than spacing out, or being distracted.
