Their debut single, "Idiot Strength" was released in 1981 on Rough Trade,[1] following which Duffy was replaced by Steve Hawkins on bass and Andy Lloyd and Nick Beales joined on guitars.
The band signed to Cherry Red Records and released three more singles before debut album Pigs on Purpose (Produced by Richard Strange) was issued in late 1982.[5] John Nester replaced Hawkins on bass before next release, the "Urban Ospreys" single.
Peter Byrchmore replaced Beales (who went on to form Pig Bros) in time for second album, Hysterics (1983), Nester then departed to be replaced by Howard Jenner. The new line-up issued two singles in 1985. Further changes then ensued with Andy Lloyd and Paul Apperley leaving, to be replaced by Maria Smith and Ron Collins. The group continued to release singles, record Peel Sessions and tour northern Europe, as headliners and supporting acts as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico, but after the third album, In The Good Old Country Way, the band split up in 1986.[1]
Post-Nightingales
After the split, Robert Lloyd formed a new band, Robert Lloyd & The New Four Seasons, who after a few releases on In Tape Records were signed by Virgin Records.[5] Lloyd recorded one solo album for Virgin, "Me and My Mouth".
Maria and Peter formed The Capitols, later known as The Rotten Swines (Maria was also a member of Rumblefish),[6] Ron Collins joined The Noseflutes, while Andy Lloyd formed Little Red Schoolhouse.
Lloyd is currently active in the reformed Nightingales. Peter Byrchmore plays guitar for The Membranes and Goldblade. Nick Beales is in Church of Elvis and Andy Lloyd is in Del Mar Rey.
Paul Apperley is now a firefighter. John Nester runs a successful 'Glastonbury-style' gift shop in Bridport, Dorset. Howard Jenner was last heard of working for Help The Aged. Eamonn Duffy, Maria Harvey (formerly Smith) and Ron Collins still live and work in Birmingham. Steve Hawkins' whereabouts are unknown.
The Nightingales re-form
The band re-grouped in 2004 featuring mainstay/band leader Lloyd, original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley, ex-Nightingales Byrchmore and Duffy, plus former PWEI drummer Robert "Fuzz" Townshend. This line-up released four 7-inch singles in 2004/5 before Townshend was replaced by Aaron Moore of Volcano The Bear.
Live appearances include radio sessions for Marc Riley's Rocket Science on BBC 6 Music, John Kennedy's XFM show, Terre T's Cherry Blossom Clinic on WFMU (USA) and Another Nice Mess (NL) in addition to gigs around England.
The band also played American music festival South By Southwest in March 2005, alongside dates in Chicago and New York City. The band's first American dates ever. Since then they have also played at the Klangbad festival in Germany, organised by Jochen Irmler of Faust, and undertaken a second US tour in March 2007.
After several line up changes since reforming, the group line-up settled, for a while, as Robert Lloyd (vocals), Alan Apperley (guitar), ex-Pram drummer Daren Garratt, "teenage guitar sensation" Matt Wood, and Stephen 'The Night' Lowe (bass). For a brief July–August 2007 UK and European tour (including a return to the Klangbad Festival on 4 August), Nick Blakey of the Boston, Massachusetts band The in Out substituted for Lowe on bass.
The Nightingales released their first studio album for 20 years in early October 2006; Out of True on independent Birmingham label Iron Man Records. A new mini album, What's Not To Love? was released by Caroline True Records on 30 April 2007.
In 2007 Lowe left the band and after being replaced briefly by Nick Blakey (who appears on the Live in Paris CD) was replaced by John Roberts.
After dates in New York and Boston in March 2008, the group travelled to Faust Studio, Scheer, Germany to record a new album – Insult to Injury – for Jochen Irmler's Klangbad label. During recording bassist John Roberts left the group. The band played dates in Germany, Switzerland and in Amsterdam, with Christy Edwards of Christy and Emily on bass. Matt Wood left following these dates.
For the remainder of 2008 in to 2009 Edwards moved to guitar and Faust Studio engineer Andreas Schmid joined the band on bass. This line up was augmented on various dates in USA and Germany by U.S avant-garde composer Katherine Young on bassoon .......................

"Philip Guston is a powerful staple of the abstract expressionist movement, though he would prefer it be referred to as the New York School. Along with composers, choreographers and his fellow visual artists, Guston found his place in the avant garde. Often times finding modern art almost too accessible, Guston strives to create pieces that encourage audiences to engage, but not without deep consideration. His paintings rely heavily on motif and repetition, emphasizing the importance of his often political subjects. Perhaps his own worst critic, Guston had a habit of destroying the work he did not find himself connecting with. Guston had no interest in simply presenting an image that he was not fully absorbed in. His passion for his work comes through in heavy brush strokes which turn and travel expressively across the canvas. In reference to his own process and the diversity within his work Guston tell us "Nothing is ever solved in painting. It's a continuous chain that sometimes doesn't go in one line, but goes in a serpentine line or in crooked paths, detours, which have to be investigated." (Philip Guston) In both his paintings and career Guston did not fear exploration but welcomed it, eagerly following the winding path of his ever evolving art."

"The band was formed as a quartet by songwriter and former Hallé Orchestra percussionist Richard Witts in 1978, but later became a trio. Witts produced the band's recordings and sang on most of their releases, the occasional lead vocal being taken by Tony Friel or Andy Wilson. Although they never truly broke into the mainstream, their most successful song was 'XOYO' which came 41st in John Peel's Festive Fifty for 1982, which was the top 50 songs of the year as voted by the listeners. The song was an experiment to see whether John Cage's method of aleatoric composition could be successfully applied to popular music composition. XOYO also appeared on the Cherry Red compilation album Pillows & Prayers. The band broke up in 1983

Giorgio Agamben is one of the leading figures in Italian philosophy and radical political theory, and in recent years, his work has had a deep impact on contemporary scholarship in a number of disciplines in the Anglo-American intellectual world. Born in Rome in 1942, Agamben completed studies in Law and Philosophy with a doctoral thesis on the political thought of Simone Weil, and participated in Martin Heidegger’s seminars on Hegel and Heraclitus as a postdoctoral scholar. He has taught at various universities, including the Universities of Macerata and Verona and was Director of Programmes at the Collège Internationale de Paris. He has been a Visiting Professor at various universities in the United States of America, and was a Distinguished Professor at the New School, University in New York. He caused a controversy when he refused to submit to the “biopolitical tattooing” requested by the United States Immigration Department for entry to the USA in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Agamben’s work does not follow a straightforward chronological path of development either conceptually or thematically. Instead, his work constitutes an elaborate and multifaceted recursive engagement with the problems introduced into Western philosophy by the highly original and often enigmatic works of Walter Benjamin, most notably in his book on German trauerspiel, The Origins of German Tragic Drama, but also in associated essays and fragments, such as his “Critique of Violence.” This is not to say that Agamben is not influenced by, nor engaged with, a number of other canonical or contemporary figures in Western philosophy and political, aesthetic and linguistic theory. He certainly is, most notably Heidegger and Hegel, as well as the scholarship that follows from them, but also Aby Warburg’s iconography (Agamben worked at the Warburg Institute Library in 1974-5), Italian Autonomism and Situationism (especially Guy Debord’s influential Society of the Spectacle), Aristotle, Emile Benveniste, Carl Schmitt and Hannah Arendt amongst others. Beyond this philosophical heritage, Agamben also engages in multilayered discussions of the Jewish Torah and Christian biblical texts, Greek and Roman law, Midrashic literature, as well as of a number of Western literary figures and poets, including Dante, Holderlin, Kafka, Pessoa, and Caproni to name but a few. This breadth of reference and the critical stylistics it gives rise to no doubt contribute to the appearance of intimidating density characteristic of Agamben’s work. Even so, Agamben’s engagement with these figures is often mediated by his deep conceptual and thematic debt to Benjamin (he served as editor of the Italian edition of Benjamin’s collected works from 1979 to 1994) evident in his central focus on questions of language and representation, history and temporality, the force of law, politics of the spectacle, and the ethos of humanity."

"1. 12XU (1977)
Colin Newman (vocals/guitar): In February 1977, we played the Roxy punk club in London and were told not to come back. Then George [Gill, founder/original guitarist] fell down the stairs and broke his leg, and we kicked him out of his own band. When we played the Roxy again on 1 April, you wouldn’t have recognised the band that had previously been playing George’s songs, such as Bad Night at the Lion.
12XU was one of our first songs as a four-piece. I wanted to deconstruct rock music, to make it sound like it came from somewhere else. So 12XU doesn’t have any chords in the verse, and the chorus doesn’t have any singing. The original lyric was: “Life’s a drag, give me a fag.” Not great, but Bruce [Gilbert, guitar] picked up on the word “fag” and used it as the American slang for gay. In those repressive times, it was a song about ambiguous sexuality that isn’t delivered like one. Someone in a dressing room asked me what the X stood for and I said, “What do you think?” We censored ourselves, but if it had been 1, 2, Fuck You, it would have cheapened it. It would have become Oi! So it’s actually very smart. There’s an arrogance when you’re young. Sitting in my bedroom in Watford, I definitely felt we were changing musical history.
. Practice Makes Perfect (1978)
CN: The beginning of Wire proper, which didn’t relate to rock history in the way [the debut album] Pink Flag did. I pissed myself laughing at Bruce’s lyric: “In my bedroom I’ve got Sarah Bernhardt’s hand.” For God’s sake, it’s sick! By this point I was obsessed with taking the “’n’roll” out of rock’n’roll and making it very precise, Germanic, taking out the swing. The der-der-der-da-der rhythm turns the first half of a common football clap into a riff. By the time I’d finished playing it to the band, they had joined in and the arrangement was complete. Rob [Grey AKA Gotobed, drums] had been surrounded by reggae in Brixton so he plays off me, a reggae groove with a rimshot. Graham is a melodic bass player and Bruce went for arpeggios. Those decisions were instant. It felt dark and mirrored the times. I knew that this was something nobody had heard before. With hindsight, you might say we’d invented post-punk.
I Am the Fly (1978)
Graham Lewis (bass/vocals): There were few opportunities for punkish bands to get on TV, but when EMI told us about a new children’s show in the Midlands, which had a pop slot, we thought it would be dreadful. So nobody ever did anything about trying to get us on. Shortly afterwards, we played at Barbarella’s in Birmingham and it was rammed: sheer pogoing madness. During I Am the Fly, 20 people jumped on stage and the rest of the audience started lying down, waving their arms and legs in the air, like dying flies. It was a dada moment – the only time it ever happened – and back in London nobody believed us. When Tiswas became a national phenomenon and launched John Gorman, Chris Tarrant, Lenny Henry et al, we realised that the audience in Birmingham had been doing the “dying fly dance” from the programme – and that was the programme we could have been on. So we’d missed the boat.
