Hey everyone and welcome to #MintCasts our Mint Press podcast series. I'm Mnar Muhawesh, editor in chief of MintPress and I'll be your host. Thanks again for joining today's conversation where we will be tackling issues of freedom of the press in the United States & FBI surveillance on journalists, journalism organizations and peace activists.
Freedom of speech and more specifically freedom of the press are cornerstones of our democracy, and the role of journalists and journalism in general is to act as a government watchdog that hold those in power accountable.
But since 9/11, government overreach has spun out of control, and our first amendment rights are being crushed in the name of national security. The most recent example of this is when the Obama administration seized Associated Press phone records last year, which the AP has called "a serious interference with AP's constitutional rights to gather and report the news."
Joining me today to talk about this and more is a very special guest: Angela Keaton, Director of Operations for Antiwar.com, an online publication devoted to the cause of non-interventionism and advocating an anti-war US foreign policy.
Just last week, Antiwar.com filed a lawsuit in federal court demanding the release of records they believe the FBI is keeping on the online magazine and its staff, specifically on founder and editor of Antiwar.com, Eric Garris and editorial director Justin Raimiando.

Today’s guest, Medea Benjamin, an anti-war activist and co-founder of the peace group CODEPINK, was shocked by the decision. Benjamin worked for ten years in Latin America and Africa as an economist and nutritionist for international bodies such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. She has authored many books, including her most recent “War in Ukraine: Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict,” co-authored with Nicolas J.S. Davies. For this latest episode of “The Watchdog”, Lowkey again talks to Alan MacLeod, this time about the BBC’s extremely close links to the ruling Conservative Party. While often criticized by right-wingers as a bastion of liberalism, a multitude of top BBC executives and directors are directly linked to Toryism. For example, BBC chairman Richard Sharp was a senior adviser to many top Tories, including both former prime minister Boris Johnson and Sunak himself. Sharp has also donated at least £400,000 to the party. Meanwhile, as MacLeod noted, the BBC’s former head of political programming, Robbie Gibb – the brother of a Tory cabinet minister – left the broadcasting corporation to become the director of communications for Conservative prime minister Theresa May.
