India is blessed with a vast array of water resources for aquaculture which has significant role to play in ensuring food and nutrition security for the growing population. The freshwater prawn of Genus Macro brachium is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical zones of the world and nearly 60species have been reported from India.

They are mostly found in inland freshwater areas including lakes, rivers, swamps, irrigation ditches, canal sand ponds as well as in estuarine ecosystem.

Though the first prawn hatchery was established in Andhra Pradesh during 1990s, freshwater prawn farming assumed national significance only after a decade. The Indian river prawn, Macro brachium malcolmsonii (monsoon river prawn), occupy the second position after giant freshwater prawn which is widely distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Culture-of this species in inland waters is gaining momentum due to two important factors - firstly management is easy as well as less labour-intensive, and secondly chance of water pollution is minimum as compared to marine shrimp culture.

The biology.

Attempts for mono- and polyculture of this species using the seed collected from the rivers has given production to-the tune of 327-774 kg 1 year.
