After four millennia God looked down upon our fallen world to see if any friendship between God and man were possible, or even if true and wholesome friendship among men were possible. He found us lacking even after He sent many Old Testament priests, prophets and kings. When God looked down and found that man had failed… that charity had grown cold and no remedy tried had worked, His love was inflamed. We can understand what God did by using the principle employed by St. John of the Cross: “love effects a likeness between lover and the loved.” Man needed Love Itself to come and effect some likeness between God and man to make true love possible. This is why the Christ child is in the manger… God has indeed become man and effected a likeness between man and the Divine. Thus, St. John of the Cross cries out in another place: “where there is no love, put love and you will draw out love.” God planted His Love in the Blessed Virgin’s womb and He is.
