Editors - Darkness at the Doors of Hamburg 31st March 2018 (Sven's Recording)
Here's another recording from Sven covering Editors' appearance in Hamburg on the 31st March 2018. Thanks again for allowing me to make your work available here at the Archive, Sven. It's very much appreciated.

There's lot of moments of seamlessness included in this setlist; the way that Hallelujah (So Low) starts on the last beat provided by the intro (which, of course, used to actually be the outro), the blends between Papillon and Marching Orders, the contrariness of having a song called No Harm fading in immediately after one called Violence. This tour also brought with it some new introductions to other tracks; the fake-out acoustic beginning of Ocean of Night and the slow, deliberate piano riff at the beginning of Papillon before the drums begin etc. It was as if that level of tour comfort had been reached where they could really begin playing around with the material, rather than creating a straight up duplication of the studio takes. There's also the unintentional deviations from the norm, as evidenced during Darkness at the Doors which sees Tom managing his expectations a little too early...

I like the way Justin uses his guitar to alter the direction of the music towards the end of No Harm. It's something so slight that it's easy to miss, but I've listened to that song so many times that it stands right out to me. It's a similar technique to the one he used on the Blanck Mass version of Hallelujah (So Low) when he plays that massive signature riff. If you listen to that take and then the officially released one with the accompanying video by Rahi, you'll hear it. The riff on the BM version starts off at a flat level and then drops, but when that guitar part hits on the VI OLENCE recording it drops down immediately and seems to take all the other components of the song with it.

No Harm at this show in Hamburg has this little part at the very end where Justin does a three note climb during the outro, at a point where it all the instruments usually hold and maintain a set level before dissolving to a close. It has the effect of him almost musically walking away from the song, or even trying to resuscitate it just as it's fading out. It really appeals to me, for some reason.

Enjoy the music ;)
