Negative temperature is REAL (Purcell & Pound experiment)
Hi everyone,
Jonathon Riddell here. Here we explain the Purcell and Pound experiment which showcases a real, physical system with negative temperature.
Edit: In this video I refer to "low temperatures." It would be more proper to refer to them as "sufficiently low" but actually in the case of this exact experiment, the experiments were carried out at 300 Kelvin!
Hey everyone, Jonathon Riddell here.
In this short we derive the Equipartition theorem for quadratic terms in the energy. This is a beautiful results from classical statistical mechanics that everyone should see at least once.

Hi everyone,
Jonathon Riddell here. I was recently interviewed by Darren, an undergraduate student at McMaster university. This is a bonus episode of the podcast: MAC PAP, a podcast run by McMaster physics students. In the video we chat about my journey as a physics student and researcher, advice I would give to undergraduate students and more!
