Mole Snake Behaviour in Koeberg Nature Reserve (20180513)
Mole Snake (Pseudaspis cana) - non-venomous, but can inflict a painful bite.

I found this Mole Snake whilst on a hike in Koeberg Nature Reserve.

Mole Snakes are found in a variety of habitats, even mountainous regions and deserts, but they're particularly common in sandy scrub-covered and grassveld regions.
They spend most of their time underground, pushing their way through soft sand in search of moles and other rodents. Viviparous, they give live birth to anywhere between 25-50 babies in late summer.
Interestingly, juvenile (young) mole snakes have a variety of patterns and colors that they lose completely once they reach adulthood.

I was called by a local golf course to relocate this Spotted Skaapsteker for them earlier today.

Spotted Skaapsekers average 45 - 85cm in length and can be found inhabiting fynbos, grassland, and moist savannah throughout most of South Africa.
They're diurnal (active during the day), and actively hunt rodents, lizards, birds, frogs, and other snakes.
Spotted Skaapstekers are mildly venomous, but they pose no danger to humans.
They are oviparous (egg-laying), and the 8-30 eggs they lay in the summer hatch about 6 weeks later.

Jumping Spiders are found in almost every kind of environment, and at 3-17mm in size, are quite small.
They have the best vision of all the hunting spiders, and can have quite an intense stare.
They are diurnal (active during the day) and active hunters who search for their prey, moving around with quick darts and long leaps.
Before each leap the spider connects an anchor line to the substrate with an attachment disc - if it misses its landing or does not land on solid ground, it can haul itself back to safety.

Olive House Snake (Lamprophis inornatus) - non-venomous and harmless to humans.

CORRECTION: I incorrectly identified this snake as a "Common Brown Water Snake (Lycodonomorphus rufulus) in the video.
I was called out to remove a small unidentified snake from Camps Bay today. It turned out to be an Olive House Snake - these guys are nocturnal and tend to be a uniform olive green, olive gray, light brown, or brownish black to black in color, with underparts uniformly dark as above or slightly lighter.
They are oviparous, laying 5 - 15 eggs in summer.

Common throughout most of South Africa (excluding mountain-tops, true desert, and dense forests), Puff Adders are slow-moving and excitable snakes with potently cytotoxic (tissue destroying) venom.
Puff Adders rely on their camouflage to remain unseen, and when disturbed they coil into a defensive "S"-shape and hiss loudly (hence their name). They usually move in a straight caterpillar-like motion but may move in a more rapid serpentine motion when trying to get away.
They are responsible for a large number of bites because unlike most other snakes they won't move off when approached, and their exceptionally fast striking ability. Their fangs fold back against the roof of their mouths when not in use, and can be up to 18mm in length - this video provides an example of how Puff Adder fangs work.
As ambush hunters, Puff Adders sometimes wait motionless in one spot for hours at a time. They feed on rats, mice, birds, lizards, and occasionally other snakes.
Viviparous, they give birth to 20-40 young in the late summer months.

Also known as a "Koperkapel" or "Geelslang" in Afrikaans, the Cape Cobra is a common venomous snake that can range in colour from yellow through reddish brown to black.
When threatened or cornered, Cape Cobras are quick to spread a hood and won't hesitate to bite. Their venom is highly neurotoxic (the most potent of any African cobra), attacking the nervous system and causing respiratory collapse (the victim stops breathing).
Cape Cobras feed on rodents, birds, lizards, toads, and other snakes.
Oviparous, they lay 8-20 eggs in mid-summer.

I was called out to remove this young Mole Snake from someone's yard near Malmesbury today.
As I got there a neighbor was about to kill the snake with a shovel, luckily I was able to stop him, capture it, and then tell them about it afterwards.
