Recently married, Quentin and Tracy Collins have just moved into Collinwood, a New England estate that has long been in the Collins family and which Quentin has just inherited. Quentin wants to find somewhere in the mansion to do his painting that will, among other things, give him some inspiration. The estate's humorless housekeeper Carlotta Drake, who comes from a long line of domestics serving the Collins family at Collinwood, directs him to the room in the tower. After his first trip to the tower room where he finds many other paintings, Quentin begins to see visions and have nightmares including that of a young woman hanging dead in a tree outside the mansion.
A roadside garage in 1982 is seemingly stuck at 8:54pm, A car from 1948 appears with a man and a woman apparently waiting to return to 1948. Sapphire, Steel and Silver investigate, then time shifts forward to 9:04pm.

Business executive Alan Patterson's life takes a surreal turn when two mentally disturbed people independently wind up with fixations on his life. One wants to marry him, and the other wants to be him.
Several people disappear from and at the sea. Their bodies are found gnawed to the skeleton, even the marrow is missing. The scientists have no idea which animal could do such things. Dr. Turner begins to suspect that the company which builds a tunnel beneath the bay might have poisoned the environment and caused an octopus to mutate to giant dimensions.

A strange black meteor crashes near the town of San Angelo and litters the countryside with fragments. When a storm exposes these fragments to water, they grow into skyscraper-sized monoliths which then topple and shatter into thousands of pieces that grow into monoliths themselves and repeat the process. Any humans in the way are crushed or turned into human statues. The citizens of San Angelo desperately try to save themselves and the world from the spreading doom.
