June 14, 2003 – Kris Millegan – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 11

Kelley Vlahos discusses the latest with Julian Assange, who now will be testifying in a spying case involving the Spanish company UC Global, and which may implicate America’s CIA and even top Republican donor Sheldon Adelson. Assange is being held in a London jail for missing bail, mostly in solitary confinement. His already weakened physical and mental state from seven years of isolation in the Ecuadorian embassy makes his health—and even his survival—a real concern. Meanwhile Chelsea Manning is also rotting in a cell for refusing to testify against Assange. Scott and Vlahos bemoan the very selective appreciation for whistleblowers of the American public, who are mostly indifferent about the plights of Assange and Manning.
Kelley B. Vlahos is the executive editor of The American Conservative. Follow her on Twitter @KelleyBVlahos.

USC professor Muhammad Sahimi returns to the show to discuss his latest article “Deconstructing Neoconservatives’ Manifesto for War With Iran.” Sahimi debunks the misinformation and lies being spread by John Bolton and other neoconservatives about the Iran Deal, explains in detail the steps Iran has taken to ease tensions with the United States, and lists the many hypocrisies of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. Sahimi hammers home the fact that, should the U.S. void the Iran Deal, no country in the future will have reason to trust that the United States will live up to its word in its international agreements. Sahimi and Scott then discuss Iran’s role (or lack thereof) in Yemen and finish with Sahimi documenting the history of the Iranian terrorist group MEK and its flirtation with prominent U.S. Congressmen and Senators.
Muhammad Sahimi is the NIOC Chair in petroleum engineering at the University of Southern California and a contributor at Antiwar.com and the Huffington Post.

Andy Worthington, author of The Guantanamo Files, discusses the WikiLeaks-revealed US negotiations to offload Guantanamo inmates scheduled for release; why resettling wrongfully-imprisoned Guantanamo detainees in the US remains politically impossible; how Obama can't or won't stand up to Republicans who won't countenance the possibility of closing Gitmo and holding terrorism trials in federal courts; and the large portion of Americans subscribing to Sarah Palin's fact-free worldview.

Chris Woods, documentary producer and freelancer for The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, discusses his article “Obama terror drones: CIA tactics in Pakistan include targeting rescuers and funerals;” why these attacks qualify as state terrorism by any sensible definition; how the MSM enables government officials to smear their critics behind a veil of anonymity; the circumstantial evidence that former CIA Director Leon Panetta was responsible for the targeting of rescuers and funeral goers; and why the time is ripe for formal investigations, now that Obama himself has outed the “secret” war in Pakistan.

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) discusses how American politicians have moved inexorably away from the republic and toward empire (witness the most recent Republican debate); how the Republican base – especially the youngest and oldest members – are developing a healthy skepticism of US foreign policy; and debunking the argument that the US can never “cut and run” because disaster will ensue.

Hassan El-Tayyab talks to Scott about the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, where the U.S. continues to help Saudi Arabia wage an aggressive war against the Middle East’s poorest country. Scott reminds us that President Trump could end the war with a single phone call, but is too concerned with the arms contracts with the Saudi government to risk jeopardizing the relationship. Things are already desperate for the Yemeni people, who have a hard time getting food, medicine, and clean water. These problems have led to the world’s worst outbreaks of cholera, a disease that only needs basic sanitation and nutrition to treat. It would be an utter disaster if the coronavirus spreads there on top of the problems they face already.
Hassan El-Tayyab is a musician and peace activist based in Chicago. Find his work at justforeignpolicy.org.
