Will you study Ufology? According to the Google Adwords keyword tool, across the English speaking countries of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India, there are zero searches per month for the phrases ‘how to study ufology’ and ‘how to study ufos’. Although there are about 720 searches per month for the phrases ‘ufo research’ and ‘ufo researcher’, those figures compare to 40,500 searches per month for the phrase “ufo sightings’. So one could guess that perhaps plenty of people are interested in seeing UFOs but very few actually want to study the subject in any depth. This is not surprising as it’s common to all forms of human activity. Tens of millions watch sport, thousands participate at an amateur level, and only a few have the dedication and self discipline to devote most of their waking hours to become an expert, setting the standards to which others aspire. But we’re not talking about sport. We’re talking about a subject that has the potential to change everything we know about our place in the Universe, our religions, our economies, and all the other aspects of the current human civilisation on Earth. Ufology has more similarities with a religion, or perhaps even a cult. A common statement by those joining one of the many Facebook groups centred around the subjects of UFO and extraterrestrials is, “I’m a believer.” That statement begs the question,” Believer in what? UFOs? By definition, they exist. Aliens? Which ones?” and so on. Ufology has been around for seven decades or more. There are current researchers, like Richard Dolan and Steven M. Greer, carrying the torch forward in this generation, and there are those now deceased, like Stanton Friedman, who have left us their rich legacy. Each generation needs its researchers. Will you become one? Ufology has plenty of spectators but too few dedicated researchers. Anyone can become a UFO researcher but to add value to the collective pool of information takes dedication and a considerable amount of time, not to mention money. It takes humility to keep an open mind and to be prepared to change your mind if you later discover your assumptions or conclusions were wrong. If you're familiar with Europa, one of the planet Jupiter's moons, you might know that NASA Galileo spacecraft flew by it several times between 1995 and 2003. Close examination of the images it captured lead NASA Scientists to believe that beneath its frozen surface there may be an ocean. We know from exploring the seafloor of our own oceans that hydrothermal vents warm the water around them and that this warming can create the right environment to support diverse organisms that would not otherwise exist. So if there is volcanic activity beneath Europa's crust then such vents in its oceans could be sustaining life. A group of NASA researchers are now working on designs for a tunnelbot - a probe that could melt its way through the thick layer of ice on the oceans' surface to explore the world beneath. It's a fascinating idea but we'll all have to wait many years to see if this project can provide any answers. Having said that, the years fly by fast, and while attention is focused on Mars we may wake up one day to news that there is life on Europa while Martian scientists are still looking. 2. An Aeromexico Boeing 737-800, coming in to land at Tijuana International Airport in Baja, California last week, was in collision with an object that left a huge dent and a hole in its nose, just to the left of centre. Many headlines since have said that it struck a drone but this has not yet been confirmed. When aircraft collide with one or a flock of birds the evidence is usually plain to see but in this case the damage shows no sign of blood, feather, nor any other clues. The aircraft landed safely without further incident and there were no injuries to passengers or crew. However, if it was a drone then it once again highlights the dangers created by the few rogue drone pilots who fail to comply with the best practices demonstrated by the vast majority of drone pilots. 3. Ask any aviator what they want for Christmas and you'll probably get a long list as they reel off dreams of new or vintage aircraft and the hangars in which to shelter them. But for most of us our budget doesn't stretch that far so instead why not buy them a book or DVD that they can read or watch during the winter months? While they're counting the days until the local grass strip is free of water, ice, or snow they could be learning from those who have written of their aviation experiences. This leaflet is intended to be a reminder of good sense and consideration for others which is expected of aerodrome users. It will help you to pave the way so that your visit does not cause problems for others and is at the same time pleasant for yourself and your passengers. 2 BEFORE SETTING OFF. a) Look up the aerodrome in the UK AIP (Aerodromes) [which does not include unlicensed or most government aerodromes], or in Pooley’s or other commercial Flight Guide. Check on runway lengths, displaced thresholds, location of general aviation parking areas, runway lighting, local regulations, nearby controlled airspace, noise-sensitive areas, glider launching, parachuting or other special activities, warnings, opening hours, fuel availability etc. Also check on ATC procedures and visual reference points to save you a surprise when ATC ask you to ‘report when passing X’ and you have no idea where X is! b) Use the UK AIP and a current chart to find all the frequencies you may need. Check on the VFR charts section of the AIS website nats-uk.ead-it.com for changes, then check NOTAMs through the same site for updates on those, and any work in progress, change in opening hours etc. Continued in the video... 10 SUMMARY. • Before setting off, obtain aerodrome details including frequencies, reporting points, runway and taxiway layout, operating hours etc. • If necessary, obtain permission by telephoning destination. • Call the aerodrome in good time and be ready to follow joining procedures/reporting points. • If no procedure is published, use the standard joining and circuit pattern. • On arrival, make sure it is the correct runway – and aerodrome. • If you are uncertain of your taxiing route, STOP and ASK. • Book in and close any Flight Plan. • Supervise re-fuelling yourself. • YOU are responsible for the passengers’ safety until they are in the clubroom/terminal. • When departing, allow time to obtain weather information, file Flight Plan, book out etc. • Do not taxi, or cross a holding position, onto a runway without the required clearance.
