To have a working mate session, you need to load in the guest additions into the guest OS (FreeBSD):
pkg install virtualbox-ose-additions
then add to /etc/rc.conf
vboxguest_enable="YES"
vboxservice_enable="YES"
You can reboot or start via terminal in your FreeBSD session:
service vboxguest start
service vboxservice start
then start the mate session again...
Slim has been installed but you don't need it....use startx if you need, it was here as a demo to show that you can have a graphical login and GUI in FreeBSD - I have some viewers asking whether it is possible.
