An homage to the late Chick Corea, the piano legend who revolutionized Jazz with his mesmerizing body of works and virtuous performance opens June 1st, 2022 the virtual Jazzaar Festival, Switzerland for its 30th anniversary.
The Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Fritz K Renold pay tribute to the legend accompanied by their mentors who are Jazz greats in their own rights such as John Patitucci – b (USA), Peter Erskine – d (USA), Tommy Smith – ts, fl (SCT), Christian Jacob – p (USA/FRA), Wayne Bergeron – Ltp (USA), Tom Walsh – tp (UK), Eijiro Nakagawa – tb (JPN), Tom Dunnet – tb (UK) and Christian Kramer – tb (DE). Recorded and filmed separately each from their own region, together they play the repertoire spanning from Chick’s early to late recorded numbers.
In the spirit of Chick's limitless range of possibilities, the writers of this project had orchestrated and arranged nine of his magnificent pieces renowned for their small band setting to a big band style for the jazz orchestra to effectively express the glorious intricacies and mysterious nuances of Chick's music.

Chico Freeman is one of the major players in Jazz history. Saxophonist, multi-reedman, composer and producer, embodies the intent of Jazz by finding new avenues of expression that embrace the heritage and tradition of the music.
Chico talks about his early years and successes within his versatility in music genres. He discusses about the dues he payed during his professional beginning on the bandstand with Dan O'Meara. His first live concerts, rehearsals and collaborations.
He explains how the musicians didn't get the credit the deserved, when contributing in recorded releases. That being one of the major factors, that his musical presence is not documented, despite the fact of having participated in many recordings.
Lastly, Chico Freeman, highlights the presence of his family and especially his father, Von Freeman as well as the role he played in his musical education. How he learned music in the bandstand and how Jazzaar's Bandstand Learning with Rolemodels enhances the experience and educational values on young musicians.

Ron Carter and the Jazzaar Festival Big Band
A long-awaited collaboration between the Jazzaar Festival and the late Bob Freedman to feature the
most recorded bassist in the history of music - Ron Carter was finally to be realised in April of 2019.
A few months into planning and song selection was vigorously underway by December of 2018. Bob
Freedman, who was Ron Carter’s favourite arranger seemed all elated with sleeves rolled up to whip
out gems of new arrangements when the shocking news arrived that our dear friend Bob suddenly
passed away, which brought the project naturally to a halt.
But, Bob would want us to proceed with the project, especially when he had already furnished us
with a countless list of his arrangements in the past that had not yet been heard or performed to
date. Indeed Ron Carter and Jazzaar’s Fritz Renold doubled down to create a repertoire among
Bob’s existing works between them with Ron Carter even penning an original as dedication to his late
friend. Hence “Remembering Bob Freedman” was premiered and recorded live at Jazzaar Festival
in Aarau, Switzerland on schedule. All tracks in this album were standards arranged by the late Bob
Freedman with the exception of Ron Carter’s ‘Opus 5, which was arranged and orchestrated by
Christian Jacob.
Jazzaar Festival’s educational platform called ‘Bandstand Learning with Role Models’ presents the
opportunity for selected Swiss youth musicians to apprentice alongside seasoned international artists
for a week at rehearsals followed by performances together at various venues in the country.
Remembering Bob Freedman was performed by Ron Carter & The Jazzaar Festival Big Band, directed
by Christian Jacob, featuring guest artists Ron Carter on bass, Antonio Hart on Alto Saxophone,
Ryan Quigley on lead trumpet, Jason Jackson on trombone, Donald Vega on piano and Carl Allen
on drums.
