Nothing essential happens in the absence of noise and coffee. Shukhurchi + Surj = Noisemaker + Coffee. A casual Kyma sound design tutorial (step-by-step) with a showcasing at the end. This episode shows a simple way of using live input to create a drone, soundscape etc. using the WMD Geiger Counter.

The Front Lines of the War is a spoken word sound art album made with a resonance hum of civil conflict, poetry, and experimental sound. Scheduled for release on August 10, 2021, the limited-edition box set is available for pre-order now.
Join Scott Ezell, Will Klingenmeier and Douglas Newton as they discuss the stories and production ethos behind "The Front Lines of the War."
Scott Ezell is a poet and multi-genre artist with a background in Asia, border zones, and indigenous peoples.
An omnivore of sound, lover of monophonic plainchants, noise, and the dérive, Will Klingenmeier has spent the last fifteen years living as a borderline hermit developing a distinct sonic palate. He is a sound artist placing emphasis on indeterminacy, code, field recordings and synthesis.
Douglas Newton is a Sacramento-based musician and songwriter with a background in literature and Chinese.
Scott Ezell published these poems as a collection in August, 2019, based on his first-person experience of a Myanmar military offensive in Shan State, Myanmar. In October 2019 Ezell and Will Klingenmeier collaborated in a performance at the University of California, San Diego, that explored issues of destructive resource extraction and civil war in the China-Southeast Asia border zone. A year later, war broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Artsakh, a contested region where Klingenmeier had volunteered and visited several times. Against the backdrop of this border war, and increasing authoritarianism and civil conflict worldwide, Ezell and Klingenmeier began collaborating on this sound art and spoken word version of The Front Lines of the War. This album is rooted in personal connections to contested landscapes and marginalized communities, as it explores the ways that global systems implicate us all in vectors of destruction and conflict, in which “everyone is on the front lines of the war.”
As a coda to the original collection, the album includes a section from a later poem-cycle, “Heat Maps,” based on Richard Mosse’s conceptual documentary photos of displaced persons and refugee camps.
On February 1, 2021 the Myanmar military launched a coup, jailing democratically elected leaders and sending militarized police into the streets and countryside. Air and ground offensives against civilians have continued until today, and despite international condemnation and a nationwide uprising against the coup, regional powers including China and Thailand have continued to support the Myanmar military. Tragically, hundreds of protesters, including a number of young Burmese poets dissenting against the coup, have been killed by the military. This on-going humanitarian tragedy sadly gives “The Front Lines of the War” added significance as an expression of opposition to

A follow-up tutorial incorporating the StepSequencer and indeterminate values in the Kyma sound design environment. Kyma users can pick up where we left off to build this exact sound or can skim through the video to get to the most useful parts. Non-Kyma users should still be able to get a good sense of what is going on especially the parts about the modes and note numbers.
This video builds on two previous videos which are recommended to see but not entirely necessary:

Getting Started with the StepSequencer and Indeterminacy in Kyma Part I:
https://youtu.be/PdzT0A2IQfk
As always, the principles addressed in this video can be applied elsewhere and to other parameters/sounds in Kyma, I've just decided to use them in the StepSequencer.
The real takeaways from the video are the ability to algorithmically generate the hot values, add a 'dice' button, and further understand indeterminacy.
The Sound can be downloaded from the Kyma Community Sound Library here:

DFAM lays down the beat and clocks SUBHARMONICON. I've bypassed the noise generator on DFAM with the WMD Geiger Counter for some lofi, bit crushed, percussive sounds. The melody is coming from SUBHARMONICON. A touch of rhythmic tape delay from the T•Rex Replicator and saturation from SSF Vortices as well as Instruo Tanh[3].

A generative ambient music piece coded in Symbolic Sound Kyma 7, set to a video from Gyumri, Armenia.
**Listening suggestion**
Open multiple browsers layering the video with itself and offset the start times by an arbitrary amount. Pour your favorite beverage and enjoy!
Generative music defined:
'Generative music is a term popularized by Brian Eno to describe music that is ever-different and changing, and that is created by a system.'
In other words, code was used in Kyma 7 to implement indeterminacy into the sound structure. As it plays, it is not a recording and it is not known what will happen exactly, rather it is a unique piece of music unfolding in that moment. What's more, even if it was started again from the beginning it wouldn't be the exact same thing because of the indeterminacy. Only once the sound is frozen in time, recorded and replayed, and in this case uploaded to YouTube, is it the same thing every time it is heard.
Visuals recorded on location in Gyumri, Armenia in Winter 2020.
