BBTV FEATURE: BOXING CLASSES FOR THE HOMELESS IN MANCHESTER WITH SPECIAL GUEST PAT BARRETT
BBTV went over to the Booth Centre on the outskirts of the Mancunian City Centre, a homeless charity offering activities, advice and support for homeless people.

Almost directly situated in between the Manchester Evening News Arena and the high cold walls of Strangeways prison, the centre is proving to be a sanctuary for people who are going through tough times, find themselves homeless or in fear of being homeless. They help many with mental illness too, to get on the road to recovery. They really are a special organisation, ran by a team of very special individuals.

They have recently, with the help of Adam Taylor, Josh Cook and Dr Amy Blakemore set up regular boxing classes for attendees of the centre to participate in. After a slow start the classes are now booming and it has proven to be a brilliant success and something people are enjoying and getting plenty of benefit from, adding another activity to the centres busy program.

In the video we speak to some of the people behind the boxing project and the Booth Centre, plus some of the students who take part in the classes. The rookie boxing apprentices also get a visit from some special guest local pro boxers.

Pat Barrett, the former British and European light-welterweight champion and world title challenger, came along to the centre with his nephew's Lyndon Arthur and Zelfa Barrett, two rising pro prospects, plus stand out amateur Wycombe King. Pat and his boxers are based out of the famous Collyhurst and Moston Boxing Club.

ABOUT THE BOOTH CENTRE

The Booth Centre is here to bring about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and help them plan for and realise a better future.

We do this by providing advice to find accommodation, education, training and help to secure employment, free healthy meals, support in tackling issues with health and addiction, and creative activities to boost confidence and self esteem.

"The Booth Centre is committed to tackling homelessness by working alongside each and every individual who comes to the centre. We work with them to build on their skills and strengths to enable them to move off the streets, to develop a purpose, be that employment, education or positive social activities and to develop friendships which will support them in rebuilding their lives. This year it has been a pleasure to see so many individuals transform their lives and to flourish." - Amanda Croome, MBE
