The place I am describing is one of the Easternmost regions of Russia and was almost entirely uninhabited until the start of the 20th Century, when prospectors first found precious metal. In any other place, or at any other time, it could have become a land of plenty and opportunity; instead, it became a sprawling region of despair and meaningless death, home to hundreds of thousands of slaves, forced to toil in labour camps. This classic short film from Pierre Berton depicts the Klondike gold rush at its peak, when would-be prospectors struggled through harsh conditions to reach the fabled gold fields over 3000 km north of civilization. Using a collection of still photographs, the film juxtaposes the Dawson City at the height of the gold rush with its bustling taverns and dance halls with the more tranquil Dawson City of the present.

Miner Bob Young pans for gold at his placer mine in Southcentral Alaska during the late 1960s or early 1970s. He pans for gold, pushes soil into a sluice box with his D9 Caterpillar bulldozer, moves tailings piles, cleans the sluice box, separates gold from soil, and weighs out the gold. John Baker filmed the sequence during the late 1960s or early 1970s and added narration in about 2000 (Color/Sound/16mm film).
