Everything is knowable, in principle. There are no paradoxes or contradictions in the universe. We've no reason to believe anything lies "beyond comprehension" - logical rules apply to everything, which means everything is comprehensible to some degree.

Great conversation with Dr. RollerGator envisioning life with AI. What will the cultural norms be around beloved robots? Should we let the machines hijack our emotional circuitry? Will AI become the highest-level decision makers within governments?

Original article here: http://steve-patterson.com/tautologies-must-not-be-dismissed/
Tautologies get a bad rap in philosophy. When most people say, "That's merely a tautology", they are really saying, "That's dogmatic and useless!"
I disagree with the standard orthodoxy regarding tautologies. Not only are they useful, they are foundational for our entire worldview.

What's the purpose of geometric theories? To explain the phenomena we experience? To teach us about the physical world? To give us tools that we can use to construct objects?
Do "irrational numbers" imply that numbers exist outside our minds - or do they imply a flaw with the orthodox theory of numbers?
Part three of an investigation into the foundations of geometry and mathematics.

The fundamental object in Euclidean geometry is the "point," but it's unclear exactly what a point is. Our intuitive notions of points don't work within Euclidean geometry, so some thinkers have posited different definitions. Some mathematicians treat "points" as pairs of numbers - coordinates in a Cartesian plane. But is this correct? Is geometry about numbers, or is it about objects that take up space?
