Dragondeer’s “Stay High” is an upbeat track with retro vibes that presents pliable duality at its finest. Guitarist/lap steel player Cole Rudy recalls the words and framework flowing effortlessly through his pen starting with an initial guitar riff and lyrics that were filled out with Casey Sidwell’s funky, thumping bass line; Carl Sorensen’s head bobbing boom-bap beats; and Eric Halborg’s Bowie-like vocals. The song presents a dual meaning—through the lyric “sacraments for you and me,” Rudy reflects on using cannabis as a “sacrament,” especially for engaging in musical activities and connecting with the audience. Fast forward to present times where the song fits hand-in-hand with raising spirits during an international pandemic. Whether it’s increasing output in productivity or creativity or needing a tune to help weather the storm, “Stay High” is positioned to be timeless and uplifting—whatever you want it to be to you, it is.
Artist Quote: "Since writing the song, for me, the meaning has shifted from less talking about the aforementioned "sacrament" to more talking about utilizing the tools and opportunities that life sends our way (when we're lucky enough to see them) and about fostering positive growth and unity within myself and my community by working every day to be a good human and to give back where and when I can. Through that philosophy and ushered by tenets of love and gratitude, I hope to raise my own spiritual vibration to a higher level and to encourage and contribute to that of others. ‘Stay High—the choice is yours. I prefer both,” - Cole Rudy

“Stange Times” is a reflection of initial conversations Omar Coleman had with Eddie Roberts during Coleman’s 2020 sessions at Color Red Studios (Denver, CO) testifying the bizarre state of America amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The exchange kept running back to the strange times that they were living in and Coleman took the stanza and ran with it. He immediately compiled lyrics he scribbled out on pieces of paper and knocked out lyrics from start to finish. Roberts approached the album combining classic blues with funkier blues and captured the rawness and immediacy of the music by recording through tape on Color Red Studios’ Tascam 388. “I hear Omar’s voice as a cross between Muddy Waters and Charles Bradley,” he states, “I tried to reflect those qualities in music approach and songwriting as well as the way we recorded the album and built the instrumentation of the tracks.” Joining Coleman and Roberts on “Strange Times” are Dan Africano (Ghost Light) on bass, Chris Spies (Matador! Soul Sounds) on keyboards and organ, Carl Sorenson (Dragondeer) on drums, Eric Bloom (Lettuce) on trumpet, Nick Gerlach (Michal Menert) on saxophone, Adrienne Short on viola and Kari Clifton on violin. ‘Eddie Roberts presents Omar Coleman: Strange Times’ comes out in summer 2021.

Track Description: Special Request” features John Brown’s Body’s vocalist and longtime friend of the band, Elliot Martin. Like the water flowing on the third panel of the cover art, Martin's lyrics and vocal delivery provide much-needed nourishment and vitality to the barren landscape left by the previous track. Africano reflects on the urgency to record the bassline as soon as it came to his head while in a Philadelphia hotel room on tour in January. "As soon as I got the bassline down into Ableton, all I heard was (John Brown's Body drummer) Tommy Benedetti's unapologetic drumming and Elliot's vocals soaring over top of it all." He was able to get Martin's vocals remotely and enlisted the help of Jeff Franca to mimic Benedetti's militant style for what would be a harmonically simple tune with a lot of attitude.

Lee Turley teams up with his fellow Berklee College of Music alum and Color Red collaborator, Marcus Rezak, in a powerful electronic rock anthem “Triumph.” Turley originally framed the song as a high-octane electro-dance spirit and adding Rezak’s guitars morphed it into a rock heater that could be blasted through stadium speakers. Based in Asheville, NC with over 10 years of working extensively with the likes of Papadosio, Tauk, Aqueous, and more, Turley has helped pioneer the style and influence of bringing remixing into the live touring and music scene. When mixed with Rezak’s virtuosity on the guitar and pedigree for composition, this collaboration epitomizes two musical lightning bolts striking in the same place.

“Quickie” by the Gabriel Mervine Quartet showcases the talents of four of the most versatile musicians in the Denver music scene. Mervine composed the tight-knit groove tune in 10 minutes, hence its title. Right out of the gate, the group possesses unmatched musical chemistry as Mervine (trumpet), Alex Heffron (guitar) and Tom Amend (organ) introduce the track with finely tuned harmonies accentuated by tasteful hits by Alejandro Castano on drums. Each member passes the baton seamlessly as they take a ride during the solo sections highlighting their individual talents. Both the whole and each independent part highlight champion musicality that’s been refined at a weekly residency at Denver’s Spangalang Brewery. This is the first of several tracks to be released on Color Red throughout 2019.

ATOMGA frames the question “what would happen if we were all dropped off on another planet?” in their Latin-tinged afrobeat track “Zenpocalypse.” The tune comes out swinging with a calypso-style guitar line accented by horn stabs that pave the way for a syncopated D’Angelo-inspired B section. The band shows off their powerhouse three-piece percussion section during a boisterous call-and-response percussion breakdown. Lyrically, vocalist Calysōl reflects on the way we treat immigrants who migrate to the United States and encourages listeners to ponder the possibility of everyone being uprooted to another planet—wouldn’t we all be foreigners wanting fair treatment with our family, friends and loved ones by our sides? “Zenpocalapse” will inspire you to get back to the basic energy that unities us all into a collective consciousness, especially during tumultuous and uncertain times.

The Magic Beans tap a vast pool of influences from Khruangbin to Timbaland in “Evil Eye.” Inspired by the coy look while locking eyes with a potential love interest dancing across the room, the track blends lush downtempo melodies with a rhythmic breakbeat that is perfect for both belly dancing and putting the audience in a trance. Longtime admirers of Eddie Roberts’ production work, “Evil Eye” is the first of three tracks to be released by The Magic Beans on Color Red throughout 2020.

Kevin Sandbloom wrote “NOBODYe” in the middle of summer 2020 amidst the pandemonium of the COVID-19 pandemic while feeling a little dystopian and lonely. In his latest album, Sandbloom took an off-kilter and strange approach and “NOBODYe” encompasses a full-blown folktronic swamp blues sound. He collaborated with producer Michael Morgan and within 24 hours of sending the tune, Morgan laced the song with futuristic sounds giving it a Blade runner-esque feel. This became the impetus of their collaboration and solidified the entire direction with fat bass effects that echos the work of Thundercat and production in the same ilk of jazz-inspired sonic outliers ensembles like BADBADNOTGOOD.
