How to protect Home Automation and PC with an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)
Unstable power grids, planned shutdown of electrical power, or even blackouts: How can we prepare our homes and home automation systems against such events? Today we will cover these topics with the eyes of an engineer, and I will show how I protect our home against short and longer outages. I divided the topic into two parts: You currently watch part one. Part two will air in two weeks.
Knowing how your antennas work or build and optimize our antenna is very rewarding. Unfortunately, it needs knowhow and some costly equipment to do that. Today we will change that, and I show you an affordable new tool which enables these tasks. This small device was one of my best investments I made so far.
At the end
- You know how to build and optimize a LoRa ground plane antenna
- You will know How to tune a commercially available antenna
- You will get a little theory behind it, as usual
And we will have a close look at this small gadget from China and compare it with a professional tester

The ESP32 is a beast, with some “secrets.” Today we will look at its pins and create a “Priority” pin list, which saves you a lot of time and hassle.
In this video:
- We will get an overview of all pins of the ESP32
- Learn which pins have particular purposes and therefore have to be treated with care
- Learn the real universally usable pins
- Create a strategy on how to use the many pins for our projects
- And do some programming examples

Switches or sensors without wires? No problem if you use batteries. But without batteries? The Enocean alliance created a standard for such devices. So let’s have a closer look at switches and sensors that do not need a battery change. And here I have a cheaper Chinese “clone.” How does it compare? And how do these devices compare with Zigbee or BLE switches and sensors? A lot of questions!

Viewers often ask me how I print cases for my projects. In this video, I will show you how you can print your own boxes with a simple and free of charge method based on what I call a “Configurable Base Box.”
As usual, we will focus on how you can get things done. It will not at all be a CAD tool training video.

In this video we will:
- Find the information to install Fusion360 and get a free of charge license for Makers
- Use my adjustable “base box” as a head-start
- Adjust this box to the right size and add some holes for power, LEDs, or other stuff
- I will also show you a trick on how I create perfect 3D printed holes
- and how I attach PCBs like an Arduino inside the box

UHF RFID chips promise a lot and should overcome the two main shortcomings of standard RFID tags: A reader should be able to read a lot of tags in parallel, and it should be able to read them over long distances. Where do you think this technology would be useful for you?

In this tutorial I show and explain a simple framework for the ESP8266 to enter initial data with a smartphone or laptop using HTML pages. I also show how data can be permanently saved and retrieved from the EEPROM.
I also show how you can get precise time from a NTP server.
The code is on github: https://github.com/SensorsIot/Internet-of-Things-with-ESP8266
This episode is based on the great work done by John Lassen.
