An interview with Gerry "The Monk" Hutch from 2008 but was aired on RTE's Primetime in 2016.
Gerry Hutch or The Monk as he is popularly known was allegedly the mastermind behind two of Ireland's biggest armed robberies, though no evidence has ever been presented to link him to either.
In this wide ranging interview, Hutch talks about the media, Gardai (Irish Poilce), CAB (Criminal Assets Bureau), gangland, retiring from crime and going straight. Its a very interesting interview, well worth the watch

The Fall of "Wild" Bill Lovett
In this video, part two, I will have a look at "Wild" Bill Lovett, leading up to Lovett's death in 25 Bridge Street, where his body was found. The battle between the factions of the White Hand Gang heated up in the months leading to Bills death
Traditionally, it was thought and written about that there was a battle for control of Brooklyn's docks and rackets between the Irish and Italians, that the Italians won and wiped out the Irish gangs on the docks.
On theory is that Vincenzo Antonio Gibaldi better known as "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn killed Lovett in his sleep, another says that mobsters loyal to Frankie Yale were behind it. The truth however is that it was someone from within Lovetts own gang that was the killer.
However, in recent years further research has brought to light that it was pretty much fiction and sensationalized. The truth may not be as sensational and less dramatic.
The White Hand Gang was in fact a collection of smaller gangs under one umbrella, the main factions being the Warren Street Red Onion Gang and the Jay Street Gang, who fought among themselves for control of the rackets and docks.
A couple of points to note:
The newspapers call Frank Byrnes by different names Byrnes / Byrne / Burns, they are all the one person.
Sometimes they refer to Richard and Anna Lonergan as Lanigan
They give two different dates for the murder of Eddie Hughes 2nd / 3rd of May. The 3rd of May is the correct date
It would be helpful if you could leave some feedback if you find it useful or if I have left anything out. Or leave your thoughts in the comments below.
As the Brooklyn Irish community was notoriously secretive about talking to authority, it made it difficult to piece this together. I have tried to gather as many newspaper clippings and articles in order to shed some light on the subject. Some photos have been used for informational purposes.

Crowds gather outside of Schofields Flowershop located at 738 North State Street in Chicago, Illinois, its legitimate owner was William S. Schofield but was a front for mobster Dean O’Banion who had just been murdered there minutes previously.
Dean O’Banion had been inside Schofields arranging flowers for the funeral of another high ranking mobster, Mike Merlo who was also president of the Unione Sciliana organization.
Three men entered the flowershop and O’Banion had approached them saying “Hello boys, you here for Merlo’s flowers, O’Banion extended his hand for a handshake. An employee in the store and best witness William Crutchfield, seen the three men enter and described them as two Italian men “who were short, stocky and looked rough” and the third man as “tall, well built, well dressed, smooth shaven, wore a brown overcoat and brown hat. He might have been a Jew or a Greek”. The employee, assuming O’Banion knew the men went into the backroom and around 15 minutes later he heard shots fired.
Outside the shop three boys who were going home from school for lunch, had stopped outside when the door burst open and three men ran out, one boy was pushed onto the ground by the first man to leave the shop, who he described as wearing a blue suit and blue hat and another of the boys was also pushed over by the third man who was wearing a brown overcoat and brown hat who looked older than the other two men.
The boys got on their feet and ran back to the school to get help, while the other boy followed the men who were running away and turning onto Superior Street, the boy said “When I got to the corner, I saw them get into an automobile that was parked at an alley on State Street. A woman was at the wheel of the car, with the doors open for the men” He described the woman as wearing a black veil with a brown coat and fur collar.
Back in Schofields Father O’Brien and Father Morrison had arrived, having been alerted by the two boys who had ran back to the school. However Dean O’Banion was dead having been shot five times in the head, neck and chest, the priests gave the last rites.
Dean O’Banion’s death would be described as the opening shots of the Bootleg Battle of Marne that would leave bullet riddled gangsters being found for months and years to come

Martin Cahill, also known as The General could be best described as an eccentric criminal mastermind, who had been involved in some of the spectacular heists in Irish history.
He was interviewed by Brendan O'Brien from the Today Tonight show aired in 1988
At the height of the tensions between "The General" Martin Cahill & the police, who had Cahill under 24 hr close surveillance, both sides engaged in tit for tat provocations, in attempts to get one up on each other.
According to RTÉ News on 22 February 1988, Gardaí (Irish Police) were investigating damage caused to the Garda Golf Club in Stackstown, in Rathfarnham, County Dublin.
Shovels and picks were used to dig up seven of the clubs greens and four temporary greens. There was also damage done to the tyres of 20 cars belonging to off duty Gardaí attending a function in the clubhouse, which were slashed.
Later a car that belonged to Martin Cahill was vandalised outside his house in Rathmines, County Dublin. The tyres were slashed and the windscreen was broken. Cahills house was under 24 hour surveillance by detectives but there were no arrests made in relation to this incident
It further escalated from there as a short time later someone had broken into Cahills pigeon shed, and killed them all, the pigeons were one of Cahills prized possessions.

A clip from an interview with Gerry "The Monk" Hutch from 2008 but was aired on RTE's Primetime in 2016. This clip he is talking about Irelands two biggest armed robberies ever.
The interview took place long before the outbreak of a gang war in Dublin between the Hutches and Kinahan's
Gerry Hutch or The Monk as he is popularly known was allegedly the mastermind behind two of Ireland's biggest armed robberies, though no evidence has ever been presented to link him to either.
Hutch was hit with a huge tax bill from the Criminal Assets Bureau, for somewhere in the region of 2 Million Euro, for what they said was the proceeds of crime, however Hutch disputes that in the interview and says it was for unpaid tax.
In this wide ranging interview, Hutch talks about the media, Gardai (Irish Poilce), CAB (Criminal Assets Bureau), gangland, retiring from crime and going straight. Its a very interesting interview, well worth the watch
Hutch bought a limousine and set up a service called Carry Any Body, which was a two fingers to the Irish Police and the Criminal Assets Bureau

In this video, part one, I will have a look at its most famous leaders, Dennis "Dinny" Meehan and "Wild" Bill Lovett, leading up to Lovett taking control of the gang.

In what may be an unusual looking police line-up and one of my favorite pictures. Taken in 1926 all four were brought in for questioning in connection with a Felonious Assault. They were supposed to have taken part in an attempted robbery of Charles Haffman & Albert Levy.
On 1st December 1926 a car carrying Charles Haffman & Albert Levy was driving around Central Park, Albert Levy was reported to have $8,000 in his pocket. As they were driving toward 105th Street, a car with four men pulled up next to them, one of the passengers shouted “Pull over there. We know what you got” With that Haffman and Levy drove faster, one of the passengers in the chasing car fired a couple of shots, smashing the glass and hitting Levy in the wrist and right arm. Then the car pulled over, the four occupants of the other car jumped out and ran to the parked car and began to tussle with Levy, he put a fight and a crowd began to gather, so the four jumped back into their car and drove off.
In the hospital Levy identified the four men, Charles Haffman confirmed their identities, 20 detectives were sent out to hunt the attackers and soon arrested Eddie and Jack Diamond, Fatty Walsh and Lucky Luciano. Two of the four were taken to the hospital, so they could be further identified by Albert Levy, however Levy suddenly forgot who his attackers were, he said “There’s some mistake, these aren’t the men”
Back at the police station all four were questioned about another unrelated shooting, then released. “Lucky” Luciano was issued with a summons to appear in traffic court, while Eddie Diamond was re-arrested in connection with a hold-up from the previous week.
