In the Ruhr valley, the district is defined by loose residential development mixed with commerce and industry, as well as places for local leisure. Werden, along with Kettwig and Mülheim a der Ruhr, was historically on the Bergisch Land's northern boundary. Werden traces its roots back to St. Ludgerus, who established the Benedictine abbey of Werden towards the end of the eighth century (around 799). Since then, a community has grown up around the monastery. Werden acquired its town charter, as well as its own walls and gates, in 1317. I'll begin my walk at Werden's railway station, then stroll towards the city center, showing you different sites.
