Hervé Bossin: When Biology and Engineering combine to eliminate Zika and Dengue in Tropical Islands
Senior Scientist and head of the Medical Entomology Laboratory at Institut Louis Malardé in Tahiti, French Polynesia. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Montpellier, France and an MBA from The Open University in the UK. His research focuses on the development and field evaluation of innovative strategies to address the burden of Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases in Pacific and other communities around the globe. His unprecedented pilot operation for the sustainable control of mosquitoes on the atoll of Tetiaroa incorporates the latest discoveries in evolutionary biology. Stemming from this success, his vision is to eliminate mosquitoes vectors of diseases from the Society Islands and beyond over the next decade.

Commander Dale Brown of Threat Management Center in Detroit began training people on Detroit’s east side to protect their families and businesses from violent drug gangs in 1994. His organization specializes in nonviolent strategies and tactics designed to create a nonviolent outcome.
This interview was recorded in February of 2020, before the death of George Floyd in police custody ignited protests around the nation.
In this interview Dale Brown explains how his training system incorporates psychology, law, and tactics to create non-adversarial interactions to produce nonviolent outcomes. He has trained his private security teams, members of the public and police officers.
Our natural instincts are to use violence when we feel fear, so Dale teaches his clients to understand body language and psychology to overcome fear to de-escalate a situation.
Brown applies experience managing security in private communities and Michigan marinas to explain how to identify threats to safety in a seasteading community. He recommends that we manage threats to safety and comfort (like fear of water and noise level expectations), and then create a community culture that embodies the overall objective of the community.
He answers the common questions like, how to protect seasteads from pirates? How do you make sure each seastead home is as safe as possible?
He describes how a seasteading community can create multiple levels of protection.

So once we build seasteads...what about pirates?
Well, oil rigs and cruise ships are safe from pirates, and seasteads will be, too.
There’s a flourishing industry of private security firms protecting thousands of ships on the ocean right now. They are far better equipped than pirates, and pirates have never boarded a ship with a private security team.
On top of that, less than 2% of the world’s oceans are even considered piracy waters. If crime in Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria, and Indonesia doesn’t make us fear all land everywhere, why should piracy in their waters make us fear all oceans everywhere?
Consider French Polynesia. It controls a maritime zone the size of Western Europe, and no piracy attempt has ever been recorded in its waters.

Notes:
“The deployment of Armed Private Security Companies onboard the commercial ships was a huge departure from a maritime norm of the past 100 years (no military-style firearms onboard commercial ships) and a real game changer in warding off pirates. As evidence of the impact of this measure, not a single ship with an armed security team onboard has been successfully hijacked off the coast of Somalia.” Maritime Securuty: An Introduction Michael McNicholas 2016 Business & Economics pg 346

John Trepl talks about Marine Hydroelectric Company at the Lightning Rounds at the Seasteading Conference 2012.
John Trepl is the original inventor of the Marine Hydroelectric Generator™ (MHG™) and has been a pioneer of marine kinetic energy for over 30 years. He designed, built, permitted, and deployed his 50kW MHG prototype off the coast of California for extensive testing with performance and field operations verified by Price Waterhouse. Recently the MHG project was the subject of review by the University of Texas at Austin, independently confirming the MHG commercial feasibility and superiority in design. The next phase of the MHG project is construction and testing of the commercial 1mW module.

Gabriel Rothblatt gives the talk: "Intelligent Design: Genetic Engineering R&D for the Advancement of Seasteading" at the Lightning Rounds at the Seasteading Conference 2012.
Gabriel Rothblatt, originally from Washington DC, received his BA in political science/philosophy from the University of Vermont. He remains a student of many disciplines, and has a wide range of field experience. He is currently working as a futurist philosopher and community organizer. Gabriel has been a long-time supporter of seasteading. It is his belief that the methods and techniques pioneered by seasteaders will be used as the framework for space colonization. He enthusiastically supports any ethical ambition to further the seasteading movement.

On March 8, we hosted a presentation by Colin Lennox, CEO of Settling Seas, a subsidiary of EcoIslands, LLC.
Colin invented the Self-Organizing Wetland Bioreactor (SOWB) for sewage and coal mine drainage reclamation focussing on iron, manganese, and rare earth elements.
Colin, who lives in Appalachia, became interested in acid mine drainage and wetland cycling through his sales and research with BioHaven floating wetlands in association with Floating Islands International. He moved on to develop more effective and efficient means of cycling and capturing metals by mimicking wetland processes in one or many boxed flow-through bioreactors.
The same “wetlands in a box” technology can be used as municipal waste and aquaponic hubs in deep seasteads (free floating, limited resupply) to upcycle critical black and grey water waste (C, Fe, Mn) to reclaim valuable minerals and gasses that are hard to come by on the open ocean.
Once a month, we will host a free, online discussion on a topic related to seasteading. You can find our next event at www.seasteading.org/events

Further to the need to design for extreme environmental conditions that Seasteaders can expect to encounter, there are other “storms”, political, social, economic, physiological and indeed psychological ones that the community will have to weather. The first half of the talk gives an overview of the 1st place winning submission to the 2015 Seasteading Institute completion = https://www.seasteading.org/architectural-design-contest/storm-makes-sense-of-shelter/
The concept is one that is driven by:
Connection with land and vegetation
Self sufficiency and independence
Ease of platform configuration
Resilience and Sustainability
Materials and Modularity
The intent is for an architecture derived from nautical technology and sensibility, designed to take on any type of storm.
The second half of the talk looks at an interpretation of the ideas explored previously but in the Tahitian context. Manuia!
steps for the seasteading movement. On behalf of The Seasteading Institute Randy signed the MOU with French Polynesia on January 13, 2017.
