Cuomo is a Bigot - US Obama Debt, Bush's Fault
Listening to Andrew Cuomo castigate social conservatives and imply that they're not welcome in New York really brings back memories for me. And not happy ones.
Back in the early '90s, I (temporarily) became a conservative, bolting from the centrist liberalism in which I was raised, in part out of exasperation at the political correctness of the Left at the time. It was the heyday of multiculturalism, when all that seemed to matter was where you came from and how well you could emote about your origins. As long as you weren't a white male, that is. In my high-minded (white male?) way, I believed that where you came from mattered much less than where you were going — and where I wanted to go was in pursuit of timeless ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty.
Thanks to my only partially adequate reading of Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind, I naively came to believe that the Right was a much more suitable launching pad for that idealistic intellectual pursuit. That's one explanation for how I ended up as an editor at First Things magazine, a journal that's aptly been described as the New York Review of Books of the religious right.

President Obama said the debt and deficit he inherited is "baked in" structurally:
"All of this stuff is baked in, with all the interest payments for it, it's like somebody goes to the restaurant, orders a big steak dinner, martini, all that stuff and then just as you're sitting down, they leave and accuse you of running up the tab," the president said at a fundraiser in Baltimore Tuesday.

Canadian government wants 310,000 immigrants in 2018, 340,000 a year by 2020
The federal government is aiming to bring a total of 310,000 newcomers to Canada in 2018, it was revealed on Wednesday, with increases every year thereafter until 2020.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has never disguised her belief that the government is an essential facilitator of commercial activity. The Liberals don't believe the market has the acumen to thrive on its own, or pick its own winners and losers. The recent budget, the defeat of which sparked the current election, was stuffed with "targeted" spending to be doled out to companies and operations the government decided were worthy of help. Ms. Wynne regularly suggests governments "create" jobs in this way, just as the government of Dalton McGuinty insisted it could "create" an alternative energy industry by heavily subsidizing money-losing solar and windmill operations. The dramatic failure of that scheme has not diluted the Liberals' belief that governments help lead the marketplace.

Temp. Foreign Workers
Yet another report, this time by SFU Public Policy Professor Dominique M. Gross, finds evidence that Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program is bad for domestic workers. The report looks at BC and Alberta specifically and concludes that the expansion of the TFW program between 2007 and 2010 resulted in an increase in unemployment levels by 4.8 percentage points in BC and 3.1 percentage points in Alberta. This report confirms what I found in my recent CCPA report, BC Jobs Plan Reality Check. Despite slow job creation, the number of temporary foreign workers in BC grew by 28% in just four years, between December 2008 and December 2012 (the latest numbers available).
And while temporary foreign workers take up a small share of available jobs (just over 3% of all BC jobs in December 2012), the net increase in temporary foreign workers since the recession is very large relative to the few net new jobs created.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) is proposing sweeping new legislation that would make it easier for private landowners to cut down trees on their land as the state deals with one of its worst wildfire seasons in years.

You’ll also know that most commentators (including many who are usually friendly to the Liberals) have either scoffed at Trudeau’s gushy sentimentalism or scratched their heads and wondered “whatever that means”.
It would be easy to make fun of Trudeau’s airiness, the intellectual fluffiness of his election platform, the marshmallow meaninglessness of his latest promise. But the bigger issue is: Will his romance-novel rhetoric win votes?
That’s not so obvious.
Both Trudeau and NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair are going after the same voters in this campaign – middle-class suburbanites who may be worried about the trajectory of the economy and who have grown exasperated with Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s prickly-pear demeanour.
Neither opposition politician will unseat the Tories unless he and his party is able to assure middle-class voters they are a safe choice to lead the country through what may be four uncertain years.
At present, like him or not, Harper has the safe-choice vote sown up.
That is why “Angry Tom Mulcair” has screwed on a perpetual grin and jettisoned his NDP’s usual class-envy tone.
It’s why Trudeau is channeling his feminine side and sounding like the kind of man he thinks appeals to book-club soccer moms.
Despite the sniggering about Trudeau’s gossamer-thin economic policy, there really isn’t much to distinguish the Liberals and New Democrats on growth, taxation or aid to the middle-class.
Both are basing their platforms on fairy tales.
It’s just that Trudeau sounds sillier giving voice to his.

NDP government would revive gun registry, Tom Mulcair says
Tom Mulcair says a New Democrat government would revive the long-gun registry, minus the flaws that made the original registry so controversial.
The NDP leader says his party is committed to ensuring police have the ability to track firearms.
But it’s still working out the details of how to do that without running into the problems that plagued the Liberal-instituted registry that was scrapped by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.
Farmers and hunters strenuously objected to the registry, but Mulcair says requiring firearms to be registered is no different than the obligation to register a car or license a dog.

What is notable is that such losses in the early days of the Trump Administration led to coverage declaring a war on the “rule of law” and even indications of authoritarianism.
