La World Surf League (WSL), l’organisme chargé de l’organisation de toutes les compétitions professionnelles de surf dans le monde, a récemment annoncé qu’elle avait décidé d’adopter la politique de l’International Surfing Association (ISA, Association internationale de surf, l’autorité d’administration mondiale pour le surf, reconnue par le Comité international olympique) pour tous ses circuits, concernant l’inclusion des « athlètes transgenres ». Selon cette politique, les surfeurs hommes qui se disent femmes peuvent, sous certaines conditions, participer aux compétitions réservées aux femmes. Quelles conditions ? A priori, il faut juste que les athlètes hommes (qui se disent femmes) maintiennent un taux de testostérone inférieur à 5 nmol/L (nanomoles par litre) de manière continue au cours des 12 mois précédant une compétition.
Une telle règle est absurde, indécente et injuste pour de nombreuses raisons.
1. Les sports réservés aux femmes devraient être réservés aux femmes. (Aucune justification supplémentaire ne devrait être nécessaire ; le fait que des hommes se prennent pour des femmes ne devrait avoir aucune espèce d’importance.)
2. Les femmes athlètes ont un taux de testostérone dans le sang situé quelque part entre 0.12 et 1.79 nmol/L (soit bien moins que les 5 nmol/L requis pour les hommes-qui-se-disent-femmes).

Comme l’écrit la biologiste britannique Emma Hilton : « Les avantages des hommes en matière de performance physique, attribués à des paramètres anthropométriques et de masse/force musculaire supérieurs développés lors de la puberté, ne sont pas supprimés par le régime actuel de suppression de la testostérone permettant la participation de “femmes transgenres” dans des catégories sportives réservées aux femmes. » Les capacités physiques supérieurs des hommes se développement principalement durant « la puberté masculine induite par la testostérone — la testostérone à l’âge de 13 ans produit des effets physiques qui ne peuvent être annulés par une baisse de la testostérone à l’âge de 30 ans ». Par rapport aux femmes, « les hommes peuvent courir 10 % plus vite, sauter 20 % plus loin, lancer une balle 50 % plus loin et soulever des charges 65 % plus lourdes. Grâce à des épaules plus larges et à une masse corporelle supérieure, les hommes sont presque deux fois plus forts que les femmes au niveau du dos et des épaules ; ils peuvent exécuter un mouvement de type coup de poing avec une force 2,5 fois supérieure à celle des femmes.
La preuve de cette capacité athlétique masculine supérieure est visible dans les records des athlètes d’élite, des clubs et des écoles. Il s’agit de la raison pour laquelle les athlètes femmes ont besoin d’une catégorie sportive protégée. Sans cela, elles ne peuvent espérer gagner ; dans certains sports, aucune n’atteindrait le top 10 000. Si l’on compare des athlètes de même niveau en matière de talent, d’entraînement, de nutrition, etc., l’avantage des hommes dans les compétitions sportives semble insurmontable ; certains universitaires ont conclu que les femmes ne pourront jamais courir ou nager aussi vite que les hommes. D’ailleurs, les meilleures athlètes femmes ne peuvent pas courir aussi vite que les garçons les plus rapides, qui battent les records des athlètes féminines d’élite dès l’âge de 14 ou 15 ans, ce qui souligne l’importance de la puberté dans le développement corporel. »
En outre, « l’avantage des hommes sur les femmes ne se limite pas aux différences physiques et fonctionnelles conférées par la morphologie, la constitution et la taille des hommes. De toute évidence, les athlètes féminines doivent généralement faire face aux effets du cycle menstruel et aux effets cycliques des hormones sur la capacité d’entraînement et la performance. Le cycle menstruel est connu pour affecter les fonctions cardiovasculaires, respiratoires et cérébrales, la réaction aux aides ergogéniques, l’orthopédie et les paramètres métaboliques, et représente un obstacle à la capacité athlétique que les hommes ne connaissent pas. De plus, la susceptibilité aux blessures diffère entre les hommes et les femmes, ce qui a un impact sur le temps d’entraînement. De nouvelles recherches montrent que, par rapport aux hommes, les joueuses de rugby semblent plus susceptibles de subir des blessures par commotion, avec des conséquences plus graves. Ce phénomène a été attribué à une moindre résistance à l’impact des muscles du cou et à des structures cérébrales plus délicates. Des études sur la fragilité neuronale des cellules nerveuses masculines et féminines dans une boîte de Pétri ont révélé que les neurones féminins sont plus facilement endommagés par les lésions dues à l’étirement. »
