Where do fluoridation chemicals come from? In this short video, FAN’s Executive Director Paul Connett PhD addresses why we should be paying attention to the source of fluoride chemicals added to our drinking water.
Ralph Nader Talks About Fluoridation
Consumer advocate, Ralph Nader, discusses his long held thoughts and opinions on water fluoridation. Nader has made his public opinions against fluoridation available to the public for over four decades.
American progressive, political activist and five-time candidate for President of the United States, Ralph Nader is also an author, lecturer and attorney. He is a graduate of Princeton and Harvard Universities and has served as faculty at the American University Washington College of Law.
Nader came into prominence after the publication of his book, "Unsafe at Any Speed," published in 1965 - a description of the safety record of the Chevrolet Corvair automobile, which had been widely known as one of the most dangerous cars on the road during that era.
His activism in multiple areas of public safety and universal rights has earned him a reputation as being one of the most visible and vocal consumer advocates in the nation. Nader has also been named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th Century by Life Magazine in 1990.

Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, is a clinician scientist and a physician certified in public health and preventative medicine, with a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree.
Dr. Lanphear has studied the impact of toxic chemicals, including lead and pesticides, on children's brain development for over 20 years. His research has been almost exclusively funded by federal agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Health Canada.
He has served on multiple scientific advisory boards for the EPA and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has earned various awards for his work, including the Research Integrity Award from the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology and the Advocacy Award from the Academic Pediatric Association.
Dr. Lanphear is well-known in the environmental science community for authoring seminal research on the neurotoxicity of low levels of lead. His blood lead research, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was cited by the EPA as the critical study upon which the agency based the current national air standard for lead.
He has also co-authored several landmark human studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on fluoride and the brain.
He works as an investigator at BC Children's Hospital and as a professor of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. His research focuses on fetal and childhood exposures to environmental neurotoxins.
**Please pardon the video quality, we had to enlarge his Zoom screen from an event where Dr. Lanphear was invited by City Council members in Dallas, Texas in November 2023 to present on the topic of fluoride neurotoxicity.
This December, our goal to fund our 2024 operating budget will be $120,000 from 800 donors by midnight Pacific Time on December 31st. All donations large and small are important to us and are tax-deductible. Your generosity will not just inspire action, it will facilitate it.

When fluoride was first added to water in the 1940s as a means of preventing tooth decay, not a single dental product contained fluoride: no fluoride toothpastes, no fluoride mouthrinses, no fluoride varnishes, and no fluoride gels. In the past 60 years, as one fluoride product after another entered the market, exposure to fluoride increased considerably, particularly among children.
Exposure from other sources has increased as well. Other sources include processed foods made with fluoridated water, fluoride-containing pesticides, bottled teas, fluorinated pharmaceuticals, teflon pans, and mechanically deboned chicken. Taken together, the glut of fluoride sources in the modern diet has created a toxic cocktail, one that has caused a dramatic increase in dental fluorosis (a tooth defect caused by excess fluoride intake) over the past 60 years. The problem with fluoride, therefore, is not that children are receiving too little, but that they are receiving too much.

Dr. Paul Connett, Executive Director of the Fluoride Action Network, interviews Dr. Bob Dickson, MD and Dr. James Beck, MD, PhD on the looming battle over water fluoridation in Calgary, Canada. Calgary stopped adding #fluoride to its water supplies in 2011 but recently a strong push from the fluoride lobby threatens to restart fluoridation. In this video, Dr. Dickson and Dr. Beck share their thoughts on why adding fluoride to Calgary’s water supplies is a VERY BAD IDEA.
What happens in Calgary could have major implications for other Canadian cities, as well as other fluoridated cities across the globe.

A power outage in Sandy, Utah on Feb. 6 caused dangerously high levels of fluoridation chemicals to enter the drinking water supply, which then corroded the pipes allowing high levels of copper and lead to enter the system. This made numerous residents ill, including a 3-month old baby. The local media is also reporting that the city failed to quickly notify the state of Utah or its residents of the dangerous contamination.
