Ep. 5243 – Grant Smith on the IRS’s Israeli Settlement Corruption – 4/24/2020
Scott talks to Grant Smith about his organization’s Freedom of Information lawsuit against the IRS, an attempt to get the agency to reveal its policies on tax-exempt organizations overseas. Of particular interest is the shocking fact that billions of dollars of tax-deductible money has been donated by American taxpayers in recent years to fund organizations that build settlements on Palestinian land. This makes no sense, says Smith, since the point of such tax policies is to offset “public good” costs that would otherwise be shouldered by the U.S. government. Not only do these activities service no such need, they are actually causing great harm to Palestinians.
Grant F. Smith is the author of a number of books including Big Israel: How Israel’s Lobby Moves America, Divert!, and most recently The Israel Lobby Enters State Government: Rise of the Virginia Israel Advisory Board. He is director of the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy in Washington, D.C.
Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), author of Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom, discusses the slow escalation and deepening US commitment in Libya; why Hillary Clinton and the rest of the Obama administration, not Congress, ultimately control the government’s purse-strings; and how a failed impeachment vote (and it would definitely fail) on Obama’s unconstitutional war in Libya would effectively empower him further.

Ray McGovern discusses the lasting impact of the “Russiagate” conspiracy, which Democrats have continued to push throughout President Trump’s entire first term. McGovern reminds us that according to recorded testimony released only this year, CrowdStrike (the technology tasked with investigating the DNC email leak) admitted all the way back in 2017 that they had no evidence for the allegation that Russian agents had perpetrated any sort of hack. That means that a narrative that has continued to dominate the mainstream media and Democratic political discourse for three years was known to have absolutely no basis in fact. McGovern fears that the very same tactics used to rein in Trump could be turned around and used on Biden, were he to defeat Trump later this year. Although McGovern strongly opposes the Trump presidency, he regrets the fact that a Biden victory would most likely mean that this whole scandal gets swept under the rug.

Donald Bolduc shares some of his experience from his time overseas with the U.S. army during the terror wars. He spells out the fact that although America’s mission is ostensibly to suppress groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS, we often end up supporting the very same people in one place that are the enemy elsewhere. This happened in Mali, fighting those we had supported in the regime change war in Libya in 2011, and in Syria, where America sided with Al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels in the rebellion against Assad. Bolduc stresses the importance of getting U.S. troops out of these theaters of war, because the sooner America stops interfering, the sooner the kind of blowback we’ve seen constantly for the last two decades will end.
Donald C. Bolduc is a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General and former commander of U.S. special operations in Africa. He served ten tours in Afghanistan before deciding to run for senate in New Hampshire. Follow his campaign at donbolduc.com.

Scott interviews Gareth Porter about his coverage of a recently-released document liberated by Daniel Ellsberg when he originally leaked the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. This document, Porter explains, shows how in 1958 the military wanted to use tactical nuclear weapons against China over the offshore islands crisis. It was only Eisenhower's intervention that stopped the Joint Chiefs from going ahead with the plan, though ironically, it was Eisenhower's own efforts to combat the military-industrial complex by reducing conventional military forces that helped lead to an increased focus on nuclear weapons as a primary military tool in the first place. Ellsberg has released this document because the idea that the U.S. might go to war with China over Taiwan has thrust this issue to the fore once again. Nuclear brinksmanship, he says, remains one of the greatest threats not just to American national security, but to the very survival of the human race. The idea of an all-out war with China as in any way a legitimate possibility must be vehemently opposed before we ever come to the point of using nuclear weapons again.
