Test Run of Making the Zinc-Copper Couple for the Simmons-Smith Cyclopropane Synthesis
In this video I make up the zinc-copper couple needed to do the Simmons-Smith cyclopropane synthesis from dibromomethane and I strongly suspect from diiodomethane as well. I've never made or even seen this stuff before so any feedback you guys have would be very welcomed.

In this video I carry out the prep of beta-nitrostyrene from benzaldehyde and nitromethane as described in Vogels Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry, 5th Edition, page 1035. This type of reaction is called a Henry Reaction and it has great synthetic utility as a carbon-carbon bond forming reaction. This kind of reaction featured heavily in the various synthetic procedures given in PIHKAL although I should stress that beta-nitrostyrene itself is neither listed nor controlled and can't be used to make any controlled substance that I am aware of (not easily anyways).

In this video I first synthesize a solution of mercuric nitrate from mercuric oxide and nitric acid. I then precipitate out mercuric thiocyanate. The potassium nitrate solution is decanted, the solid is washed, and then combined with another solution of potassium thiocyanate before being boiled. This produces a solution of potassium tetrathiocyanatomercurate(II). I then add a solution of cobalt chloride to precipitate out cobalt tetrathiocyanatomercurate(II). As I was making the video I found some online discussions that pointed to cobalt tetrathiocyanatomercurate and mercury tetrathiocyanatocobaltate being the same compound. I found an a prep video of mercury tetrathiocyanatocobaltate so I could compare that compound with the product of my synthesis. They were identical in appearance.

In this video I make the acetylacetonate of nickel(II) using nickel(II) nitrate hexahydrate, 2,4-pentanedione (acetylacetone), and sodium hydroxide. I had a few problems with this prep but in the end everything worked out fine. This prep is really easy to do and would be a good one for an amateur chemist who was just getting into tinkering with transition metal complexes.

In this video I give my thoughts on a popular method used to extract freebase DMT from various plant sources and why it's a bad extraction method. I do this purely for purposes of harm reduction and education. I do not now nor have I ever condoned anyone manufacturing controlled substances for any reason.

This is NOT the 1000 YT sub special which should be up by tomorrow. I would NEVER make a safety video count as an actual chemistry video. :-) This video is one that I have put off making for a long time but with all the stuff going on right now I think that this is a good time to put this out there. And since it's a rainy day which is getting in the way of the experiment I want to do it seemed like a good time to do it.

In this video I make potassium hexathiocyanatochromate(III) from chromium(III) nitrate and potassium thiocyanate. After evaporating the solution down the impure solid is extracted into ethyl acetate to separate the product from the potassium nitrate also produced in the reaction. The ethyl acetate solution is then evaporated down to obtain the final product.

In this video I synthesize thallium(I) chlorate from the metal. Thallium metal was dissolved in ~1.56M sulfuric acid to which a few drops of RFNA were added to speed up the process. When dissolved, evaporated down, and cooled crystals of thallium(I) sulfate formed easily. These were redissolved and aqueous barium chlorate was added to the thallous sulfate solution. Barium sulfate was filtered out and the solution was evaporated down to crystallize the thallous chlorate. After drying in a sun-warmed desiccator over 3A molecular sieves a very pure, free flowing thallium(I) chlorate powder was readily obtained.
