There were 24 council seats up for grabs, when voters went to the polls on Thursday, May 6. In two wards, there were two vacant seats instead of only one – in Lamesley, where Councillor Mary Foy is resigning her seat to concentrate on her duties as MP for the City of Durham, and in Birtley following the death last year of Councillor Neil Weatherley. Three senior councillors were up for re-election after their terms expired.
