It seems that people are no longer able to have a decent conversation with each other about politics or other controversial topics. Social media exacerbates our tribal tendencies and often we get entrenched in our own beliefs. It often takes the wisdom of one who has had years of experience talking to and discussing hot button topics. There’s no better person for to talk to about this than EconTalk host, Russ Roberts.
Russ Roberts joins us for this episode to discuss what it takes to maintain a civil discussion during the holiday season (or any season!). With insight and wisdom from Adam Smith to his experience as host of EconTalk and a professor, Russ shares with us some very important things about life, both in the personal sphere and the social sphere.

Proverbs 20:18 Plans are established by counsel; by wise guidance wage war.
This nuggety bit of wisdom from King Solomon was unfortunately not taken by the current President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin - gosh just saying his name makes you want to be a corrupt oligarch - anyhow, the Vlad wanted to wage a war with his neighbor Ukraine, and for the last 8 months things have not been going so well. Which is funny because it’s not like Ukraine is a beaming beacon of righteous virtue ready to be defended by all the world, no you’re more likely to want to defend Ukraine if you’ve got a few billion greenbacks to launder. And many in the Russian halls of the Kremlin thought that this little excursion into the hinters of Kherson would take but a few weeks, but thus it has not turned out to be so. And for so long we here in the west were told that the most fearsome and formidable fighting machine is the no longer red army. It seems that the current residents of Ukraine are doing a mighty good job at staving off the attack long enough to turn the political tides of the war. So maybe Putin should have spent more time in the library reading books from his allies in China, the country just south east of you.
“He who wishes to fight must first count the cost. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be dampened. If you lay siege to a town, you will exhaust your strength.” -Sun Tzu
Actually, it’s going so poorly with the Russian regulars, that they’re going to be conscripting people into service, and if you’re any student of military history, conscription does not go well if your people do not agree with the reason of the war, it never does. Take an army of 300 Spartans over the horde of the Persians any day. But today you have many Russian men fleeing Russia, you can’t even get a one way ticket out of Russia currently because their sold out!

Perez offers a "behind-the-scenes" of the creative journey for his new book, as well as experiences in the life of professional comedy - especially in today's highly charged and political climate.
Lou Perez was the Head Writer and Producer of the Webby Award-winning comedy channel, We the Internet TV. During his tenure at WTI, he made the kind of comedy that gets you put on lists and your words in the Wall Street Journal: "How I Became a 'Far-Right Radical.'" In addition to producing sketch comedy, stand-up, and opinion writing, he's also host The Lou Perez Podcast.
Perez details some of the back story to his book. He remarks about how his publisher gave him complete creative freedom to "write the book you want."
