The sacrifice of the 110th Regiment and the Combat Command Reserve from the 9th Armoured Division, which fought fiercely on the roads to Bastogne, slowing the German panzer columns, enabled the arrival of American reinforcements in Bastogne. By December 19th, the 101st Airborne Division and elements of the 10th Armoured Division had arrived. Armour immediately went to nearby villages to stop the German advance while the paratroopers formed an all-around perimeter around Bastogne. Two days later, the Germans bypassed the town, and The Siege of Bastogne began.

In September 1944, US Navy's Pacific Fleet moved on to the next objective of their island-hopping campaign, the Palaus islands. According to the plan designated as Operation Stalemate II, the American troops were to take the archipelago's two southernmost islands, Peleliu and Angaur. On September 15th, the landing of marines from the US 1st Marine Division on the island's beaches marked the beginning of the battle of Peleliu, which would prove to be one of the hardest and most brutal battle ever to be fought in the Pacific theatre.

Although largely overshadowed by the other fierce battles at the Pacific theatre, the seizure of Tinian was one of the best executed amphibious operations of the Pacific campaign during World War II. In just nine days, men of the 4th and 2nd Marine divisions cleared the island achieving a swift and easy victory.

On December 16th, 1944, over 240,000 men grouped into three German armies, secretly assembled in the Ardennes region, launched an operation code-named Wacht Am Rhein against American forces, which held a thin line in this quiet sector of the Western Front known as a Ghost Front. This operation would be the last major offensive action in the west, better known as the Battle of Bulge.
The area around the region's main road and rail junction, the small town of Bastogne, would soon become the epicentre of this desperate battle.
