Naturalization of the Soul: Self and Personal Identity in the Eighteenth Century
Author: Raymond Martin File Type: pdf ReviewIts authors are professors of philosophy and psychology, respectively, and together they bring to intellectual history an authoritative grasp of contemporary philosophical and psychological concerns. The upshot is an exceptionally rich and stimulating work in which intellectual historians, philosophers and psychologists will learn much about their own and others disciplines - this is a splendid book full of fascinating information and insights, and it deserves a wide readership. - Philosophical BooksAt every turn they seek to reassure the reader that some feature or another of the texts they discuss finds an echo in present-day debate - Identifying progress in the history of ideas is, perhaps, a price worth paying if Naturalization of the Soul helps to awaken some interest in neglected figures from the past. - Times Literary SupplementA solid piece of scholarship, based on a careful examination of an impressive number of primary texts. The authors have gone down both the philosophical byroads and the highroads, unearthing relatively obscure works, as well as illuminating some that are well-known. I found their accounts consistently thoughtful and intelligent. - MindAbout the AuthorRaymond Martin is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, US. John Barresi is Professor of Psychology at Dalhousie University, Canada. Naturalization of the Soul charts the development of the concepts of soul and self in Western thought, from Plato to the present. It fills an important gap in intellectual history by being the first book to emphasize the enormous intellectual transformation in the eighteenth century, when the religious soul was replaced first by a philosophical self and then by a scientific mind. The authors show that many supposedly contemporary theories of the self were actually discussed in the eighteenth century, and recognize the status of William Hazlitt as one of the most important Personal Identity theorists of the British Enlightenment, for his direct relevance to contemporary thinking. Now available in paperback, Naturaliazation of the Soul is essential reading for anyone interested in the issues at the core of the Western philosophical tradition.

We live in the twilight of neoliberalism the ruling classes can no longer rule as before, and ordinary people are no longer willing to be ruled in the old way. Pursued by global elites since the 1970s, neoliberalism is defined by dispossession and ever-increasing inequality. The refusal to continue to be ruled like this - ya basta! - appears in an arc of resistance stretching from rural India to the cities of the global North. From this network of movements, new visions are emerging of a future beyond neoliberalism. We make our own History responds to these visions by reclaiming Marxism as a theory born from activist experience and practice. This book marks a break both with established social movement theory, and with those forms of Marxism which treat the practice of social movement organising as an unproblematic process. It shows how movements can develop from local conflicts to global struggles how neoliberalism operates as a social movement from above, and how popular struggles can create new worlds from below. **

This book deals with the role and place of the general will in modern and contemporary political thought. This project is carried out at the crossroads of the history of ideas and political philosophy. The author tracks down the birth and the development of the idea of the general will in ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary times, devoting most of the book to the thoughts of Jean Jacques Rousseau and nineteenth and twentieth century British idealists. **

Studies on Augustine have burgeoned over the past decade, but attention has focused primarily on his writings on philosophy and theology. Less attention has been given to his political teaching, despite his well-known and influential statements on politics, most notably in his City of God. This collection of essays examines Augustines corpus with a view to understanding his political thought. Taking seriously what he has to say about politics, the contributors here begin with Augustines own reflections on politics-and often in writings where one least expects to find such reflections, such as the autobiographical Confessions, his letters, and his sermons. The contributors then consider the ways in which Augustines teaching relates to that of his predecessors, the classical thinkers, as well as to the thought of other medieval thinkers, revealing that Augustine both drew on and diverged from the classical tradition and influenced the political thought of later medieval and even modern thinkers. This important collection thus contributes to the history of political thought and to the study of the questions at the center of all Western political thought.

When all is said and done, Leadership Unplugged - leadership stripped back to basics - is all about what is said. This ground-breaking book argues that what senior executives do should rest squarely on what they say, and therefore meaningful strategic conversations must be the goal.Leadership Unplugged calls on senior executives to build organizations that are a network of conversations - between employees, employers, suppliers and customers. It calls on executives actively to influence the debates, discussions and dialogues they happen to be in right now.In this deeply researched yet practical work, the authors build an innovative model of senior executive behaviour as strategic conversation. Using a unique Leadership Unplugged framework, developed and tested with hundreds of executives over the past four years, the authors explore how a dozen global firms have tackled the art and science of strategic conversations. The books concluding call to action - to listen furiously - is a critical element of the Leadership Unplugged philosophy.

In 2004 the Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania - finalized their return to the West by joining NATO and the EU after definitively throwing off their captive nations status by regaining independence in 1991. This has not, however, halted resurgent Russian revanchism in the region given Russias aggressive actions starting in Ukraine in 2014, defense of the Baltic has gained a new urgency and prominence. In The Wests East, Lukas Milevski places the Baltic states in strategic and historical perspective. Through these nations experiences, he sheds light on how independent states have been able to persist, despite being surrounded by predatory great powers. The work offers a deep overview of the regions history, from the indigenous Baltic tribes which populated it to the post-Cold War era, followed by recent political analogies of West-Russia relations. Analyses of todays strategic balance in the region indicate the various actors geopolitical outlooks, strategic cultures, military capabilities, and non-military security vulnerabilities. As Milevski argues, the NATO-Russia relationship will play the major role in any potential conflict in the Baltic, but neutrals Finland and Sweden must also be factored into the strategic analysis. Using the logic of strategy he anticipates potential military interaction in the region step by step-from deterrence, to Russias choice of offensive strategy, to area denial and NATOs return and break into the Baltic theater, and finally war termination-to determine the answer to the ultimate question how much defense for the Baltic is enough? The Wests East gives both experts and policymakers alike the background and framework for thinking strategically about a region that has re-emerged as a significant geopolitical concern in the Putin-Trump era. **
