Let's talk about the four stages of skill mastery. I'll be applying these to movement in my talk today, but these are actually universal. It's helpful to know what they are as they'll let you assess where you are within your movement practice.
Unlike conventional workouts, there are no weight plates for nice neat progress tracking in a movement practice. The stages of skill mastery are unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and unconscious competence.
As you progress through the hierarchy the skill become more and more automatic until it becomes second nature. I like the example of driving a car. I had a request to show how to strengthen your feet and make your toes more mobile. I put this little exercise plan together to stretch your feet and toes and build strength in your feet and toes.
These easy foot mobility exercises can be done just about anywhere. Done regularly they will make for strong feet that are more mobile. The workout includes a little stretching to improve flexibility before starting the exercise progression.
The workout was designed specifically to help you have active toes for bjj.

Are you having trouble getting up off the floor? I've done a couple different videos offering techniques for getting off the floor. There's a problem though. If you don't have enough strength to safely get to the floor, these techniques won't help you. What's the solution then? You need to rebuild your strength so you can safely get down to the floor.
Whether squatting down or kneeling down, you need to start at the top. If you lack the strength to safely get to the floor rebuilding your strength is key. I'm going to break down squatting in a way that will allow you to rebuild your strength over time and allow you to apply the techniques I shared in previous videos.
Take you time and work on the movements until you are competent enough to move onto the next stage. If you rush it, you will actually set yourself back. It will take time to rebuild your strength. Keep working at it daily and soon you'll have no problem getting up off the floor!

I've some requests to share my story more so I decided to share how I left my $90k a year job and couldn't be happier about it. Leaving my job took a lot of time, planning, and sacrifice but I'm happy I did it. It's improved both my mental and physical health.

If you're any good at settings goals, you know what you want and you've even figured out how to get there. Now for the hard part. You have to implement your plan.
If you're anything like me, you have a lot of goals you'd like to hit. This can create a lack of focus that'll leave you bouncing from goal to goal.
Instead create your own 30 day challenge where you focus intensely on a single goal for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days you can reevaluate and either move on or work toward it for another 30 days.
This incremental approach will seem like you're not getting much done, but before long all the little goals will add up to huge progress!!!

What IS the difference between exercises and functional movements? A while ago I did a video on why I though pull-ups weren’t a functional movement and from comments I’ve received, I’m not sure I did the best job explaining my point. So I thought I’d take a broader approach and cover the question in general.
So in this video I’ll cover what I consider to be an exercise and what I consider a functional movement. And I’ll also talk about the differences between the two. Also remember, this is my opinion based on my years of experience, research, and training. No one has the final word on what a functional movement is or isn’t.
