In an interview with Reade published on Friday, Amy Braley-Franck, a former Sexual Assault Program Manager in the US military, said, "Violations of federal law were occurring, and I was always instructed to shut up."

Braley-Franck was in charge of the army's reaction to sexual assault and harassment and worked all throughout the United States, Europe, and South Africa. Violations of federal law were occurring, and I was always instructed to shut up, she says.

"Sexual violence in the military is out of control," Braley-Franck said, adding that "eighty percent of individuals who report being sexually assaulted or harassed face retaliation." She presented worrisome figures, claiming that one out of every four girls and one out of every five guys in the military will be sexually assaulted.

She said that the situation is one in which "suicide rates in the US military are through the roof." She claimed over 30,000 service members committed suicide during the same time period as 7,000 combat-related deaths, she claimed.

I was literally watching victims suffer. I was seeing commanders cover up sexual assaults, not report them to law enforcement, and they began to react against me every time I raised my concerns, the woman said.

At one point, Braley-Franck says that she was a victim of an act of abusive sexual contact conducted by her army commander. While her civil rights may be protected, Braley-Franck claims that service members do not have the choice of speaking out about what is happening in the military because they risk being court-martialed.

Braley-Franck claims she has firsthand experience with retaliatory behavior among military superiors, who she claims prefer to protect criminals over victims. She says she chose to become a whistleblower and formed the non-profit advocacy group "Never Alone" to support the victims.
