I installed and reviewed 4 Plant ID android phone apps: Leafsnap, Plant Lens, Picture This and Pl@ntNet. Overall, three of the four apps were fairly accurate - and I was really impressed with Pl@ntNet in particular. I initially tested them identifying 4 photos saved on my phone to see if they could correctly ID down to genus and species.
The test subjects: Rudbeckia subtomentosa, Eryngium giganteum, Cornus kousa, and Asclepias incarnata.

There's been a spike in rose demand, but for the reasons in this video, I wouldn't call it a rose shortage. There's a production difference between own-root and bare-root roses that will come into play. The faster production time of own-root roses will help to fill the gap over the short term, and over the longer timeframe I'm quite sure the bare-root suppliers will catch up.

Where do you get plants for your nursery business? You can grow everything yourself (aka "The hard way"!) or you can but plants in from other growers ("The expensive way"?). Or you can do a bit of both. In this video, I'll discuss some of the advantages of buying in plants from other growers, brokers or distributors.

Growing roses from cuttings is a great way to multiply plants (for free, if you don't count your own efforts in the cost!). In this video, I'll give you an overview of 3 kinds of rose stem cuttings, as well as three other common methods of rose propagation: layering, grafting and suckering.
I have some older videos that go into some of the methods in detail:
Semi-hardwood: https://youtu.be/211r10Jj_OY
Hardwood: https://youtu.be/nLgSxBufENw
Suckers: https://youtu.be/UKm1EgIRx-M
As for the summary chart I showed during the video, you can download (free) the image from my website here: https://www.fraservalleyrosefarm.com/rose-propagation-methods-chart/

As a beginner to growing roses, it's important to have the best information before you buy a rose plant for your garden. I'll take you through my favorite online resource: helpmefind.com : a user-contributed site with reliable stats and pictures of just about any rose in existence.

Of all types of roses, the Chinas are most dominant in the genetics of the modern roses. Their influence can be seen in flower form, an expanded range of colors, consistent rebloom and overall shrub form and habit. Here I'll survey some of the China roses and these 1st generation offspring: the Noisettes, the Bourbons and the Tea roses.

This is the way I take hardwood rose cuttings roses from late fall and into winter. The other way I propagate is by summer semi-hardwood cuttings. You can see that video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDCm4yFWPls
For the sake of time, I keep it simple - no rooting hormone, and you'll see that I don't dig trenches. Instead, I dibble holes with a pitchfork - which spaces the cuttings out nicely and keeps the rows tidy.

When a plant’s patent expires, it belongs to the world, right? Some horticulture companies don’t see it that way, and they have a questionable “workaround” to keep control. It involves (mis)using Trademarks - after years of allowing gardeners, exhibitors, media and internet sources to help them publicize a plant - they claim the “name” was always just a “brand”. And, by the way, you need to pay a royalty to use it! It sort of smacks of the the way pharmaceutical companies treat drug names, and if you can’t trust big pharma for cues on proper moral conduct...

Spoilers - not good, actually! But they're not poisonous. Some holiday plants you might be right to be wary of: Mistletoe (the real stuff) and holly berries. Here I'll also go over a few of the more toxic of the everyday houseplants. Have a happy and healthy holiday season and thanks for all your views and comments this year!
