This video shows the process of How to Propagate Autumn Olive Elaegnus umbellate using softwood cuttings and a mist irrigation system. The process involves taking cuttings during the summer, dipping the cutting in rooting hormone, and putting the cutting into a soil that drains very well. Then you mist the leaves every five to ten minutes during daylight hours. Autumn olive is a nitrogen fixing plant that produces berries and is easy to propagate from softwood cuttings. The botanical name for autumn olive is elaegnus umbellate and is sometimes called autumn berry. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow into a small multi-trunked tree reaching as high as 20 feet. The leaves are a grayish green and looks as though it has scales on the bottom of the leaves. The leaves are about three inches long and very narrow measuring only about one inch wide. It is often used in forest garden design to assist in repairing soil as the food forest garden matures. Check out the blog article at: http://greatescapefarms.com/propagating-autumn-olive/
We almost ran out of water in our rainwater harvest system. This would have caused us to lose thousands of dollars in plants.

Show notes will follow this Note: The one thing I did not think about was the seeds and plant tips. The mints flower profusely and drop seeds. They also grow out about 2-foot long and will droop over the sides of the pot and if they touch the ground, they will root at that point. The fix for that is to lay some weed block down on the ground around the plant pots.
Show Notes: How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints SpreadThis post is about How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints Spread. Previously I had mint just going wild in my garden area and it took over. This year I removed that mint from the garden area, but I still like my mint for teas and salads. So, I put together these large plant pots to contain the mints spread via underground rhizomes.
The Pot and Drainage Holes
The Pot is simply a 40 gallon storage tub I picked up from the local hardware store. I would have gone larger, but this is all they had in stock at the time. Once I had the pots, I then drilled 12 holes in the bottom of the pot to let excess water escape. Next, I put down landscape fabric to cover the holes. This was done to prevent the soil from exiting through the holes and to prevent the mint rhizomes from exiting through the holes. Because this is recycled landscape fabric with holes, I doubled it.
Fill the Large Pot with Soil
Next I filled the large pots with soil. I had some Pete moss laying around so I put a few inches of that down first. This will serve to hold some of the moisture. I also had some potting soil laying around so I filled the pot to within a few inches of the rim of the pot with the potting soil. Then I thoroughly watered the soil to make sure the sides didn’t burst with all the weight. The sides did fine.
Add Plants - How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints Spread
Finally, I added the plants I was trying to contain. I added various mints, Chinese Artichoke (mint-root), and Jerusalem Artichoke. All of these plants have rhizomes that can get out of control.
1 Growing Season of Results - How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints Spread
After one full growing season of results the pots worked great. The plants grew fine and the soil did not dry out too fast. I had concerns about the soil drying too quick because of being raised up, but there was no issue with that.
The one thing I did not think about was the seeds and plant tips. The mints flower profusely and drop seeds. They also grow out about 2-foot long and will droop over the sides of the pot and if they touch the ground, they will root at that point. This post is about Transplanting Plant Suckers. We describe what a sucker is, the difference between a sucker and rooted cuttings and how to transplant suckers.
Elderberries
I have a number of elderberry plants at my Pasadena, MD homestead. There is one in particular that not only has loads of fruits, but also has loads of suckers every year.
What’s a Sucker?
A sucker in plant terms is a new plant that pops up from the roots of the existing plant. Sometimes this is caused by a damaged root. Other times it is just one of the ways a plant propagates. That is the case for elderberries. All of my elderberries propagate via suckers, but the Adam’s elderberry has a lot of suckers.
Rooted Cutting
Suckers are not rooted cuttings. A rooted cutting is when you cut softwood, semi-softwood, or hardwood branches off of the plant and then put it in the ground. If that cutting produces roots and begins to grow, it is called a rooted cutting.
Transplanting Plant Suckers
When transplanting plant suckers, you want enough of the root to keep the plant alive, but not so much of the root that you harm the original plant or that the root is so big that it is cumbersome to work with. I try to get the root system without disturbing much of the soil around the roots that I’m taking the sucker from.
Trim the Top
You will also want to trim off some of the plant canopy. I usually try to get about five to six inches of roots and only have about five to six inches of branches with leaves. By trimming off some of the canopy it helps prevent shocking the plant and allows it to build a strong root system of its own.
Selling Suckers
I will be selling plant suckers on Great Escape Nursery. I will make sure to differentiate between rooted cuttings and suckers, so keep an eye out for each in the spring.
