Apple Music TV is now available in the United States, streaming live music videos 24 hours a day. The surprise new channel, which is free to all, promises “exclusive new music videos … live shows” and more.
Apple’s mission to make its own music service more appealing than rivals like Spotify has seen it make a number of interesting moves, like securing exclusive albums and hosting live radio stations.
Free, and as long as you live in America, available.
Strong start for iPhone 12 & 12 Pro
iPhone 12 & Pro almost matches demand for entire 11 range in pre-orders - with the highly anticipated iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max still to go on pre-sale next month. The two mid table phones gathered between 7-9 million pre-orders.
Mac mini - How cheap could it be?
What does an Apple Silicon Mac mini need?
Power Supply connection
A Mac series SOC - possibly equivalent to an A14?
Wifi & Bluetooth
Some sort of IO
Display connection
Cooling? Maybe Not
Storage.
What it doesn’t need.
A display
A battery
A touch screen
Lets look at iPad 8th Gen -
At the time that it was introduced, the A12 SOC cost around $72 per unit according to MacRumours. The cost must have now come down, considering its the heart of the iPad 8th Gen which retails for just $329. So, if we took that as our base system and built a Mac mini around it, surely we could reduce costs even further.
Right now, just to replace the display on one of these costs around $150 if its broken along with the digitiser layer. I guess we could assume the actual component cost is around $60?

Apple’s Thunderbolt Display is now Vintage - yet ANOTHER indicator that Apple may have a stand alone display could be on the way. Fingers crossed that this is for Dub Dub, but just one point. The Apple displays have in the past (at least the past decade or so) always used the display panel from the latest big iMac and comes out at about the same time as them. Just saying. I acknowledge that this story is a tidbit at best… but its what we have. Moving on.
14” and 16” MacBook Pros have showed up in the Chinese regulatory database - so we now have model numbers as well as battery capacities and voltages. So that seems pretty real. We have the presumed 16” A2527 with a 8693mAh battery at 11.45V and the 14” A2519 with a 6068mAh battery at 11.47V. The 16” drops about 100mAh vs the previous model, while the 14” is up about 1000mAh over the current 13” model, which makes sense with the larger display. In both cases, the battery life will be drastically better than the Intel predecessors almost certainly because of how much more efficient the M1X will be.
And, as we’ve said M1X, its important that we tell you again what that is. The M1 that we have now is a 4 ice storm efficiency core and 4 performance firestorm core CPU with 8 GPU cores, while M1X will have 2 ice storm cores and 8 firestorm performance cores, as well as 16 or 32 GPU cores. The M2 which will release later in the year will be closer to the M1, but with 4 & 4 faster A15 generation cores, and possibly with 9-10 GPU cores. The M2 is most likely to be the MacBook Air refresh’s processor of choice.
The MacBook Pros are also getting more connectivity, with HDMI, MagSafe charging coming back, SD card slot and 2-3 Thunderbolt/USB-C ports.
And speaking of Magsafe, here’s a seamless segue. Oh, probably less seamless since I just pointed it out. A new report from Bloomberg suggests that 2022’s iPad Pro will bring wireless charging to the iPad Pro via a glass back. Something I suggested maybe 6 months ago, but everyone told me “nah, it’ll be too heavy”.
Now, the bets are very much hedged here, with Mark Gurman saying this is in testing and could be changed or cancelled before next year, but I’d still say if it goes ahead I’d expect the frame to be stainless steel rather than aluminium, as that is a big sheet of glass you’ll need to hold and the stiffness of stainless steel will ce

For some time now I’ve struggled with fitness, so when Pico approached me to partner with them on this FitXR Challenge, I was in, and you can be too, which we’ll come to shortly.
As much as I love tech, AR/VR is not something I’d ever experienced before, though obviously it’s just become way more relevant given recent announcements. My Pico 4 VR arrived a couple of days ago, I ripped it open because obviously, we have to do an unboxing. You know how this works.
I've been having an amazing time exploring the PICO 4 so far - its far more immersive and natural feeling than I could have expected!

Why the M2 MacBook Air HAD to GO…
I’ve been away for a week so lets talk about why the M2 Air had to go, the leaked redesign for Apple’s most Popular (ie cheapest) iPad, and Mark Gurman’s thoughts on the HomePod and Mini in 2023. And of course, your iCaveAnswers… Answered.
The MacBook Air M2 is light, like lighter than the last MacBook Air by a decent, and at least for me, noticeable margin. It’s really slim, and actually, is almost too light to open one handed - a slight gripe I have is that trying to lift the lid one handed sometimes lifts the whole thing off the desk because of the magnetic clasp and the stiffness of the hinge - just something to be aware of but this also may loosen up a little with time.
The M2 MacBook Air also has enough power for probably 95% of people’s use cases. Editing all but the most demanding of video - absolutely fine. It’s noticeably smoother in Final Cut timelines than the mains powered and substantially fan cooled M1 Mac mini that I’ve been using for over 18 months daily. It’s not a leap like Intel to M1, but anyone that understands this stuff wouldn’t have expected it to be - we’re now into similar improvements to the iPhone chips year on year in terms of speed and efficiency, and that’s okay given the huge step forward that M1 was. Apple is far clear of any competitor in this weight class, and here’s the kicker. I didn’t have to charge it all week.
- Get a cable organiser bag. It’s a massive help rather than rummaging in your backpack for that one cable. We were travelling with 2 iPads, the MacBook, 2 iPhones (both 12 generation) AirPods and a couple of sets of Edifier headphones and a couple of mini USB powered medical devices for my son’s diabetes. That’s a bunch of cables.
- Take wall worts that have multiple ports - Hotel rooms are notoriously short of sockets in many cases, so you may only have one that’s accessible if you still want the TV plugged in. If you don’t have one, bring a multi way power strip.
- If you’re travelling by air with mutiple iPads and laptops in your group, put them all in one of your carry on bags, as they’ll all need to come out for Xray. Also empty any smaller tech, phones, wallets and belts that you have into that bag while in the check queue, better than setting off the scanners and having the more exciting pad down.
Next up the iPad 10th gen - Evan Rogers Asked
#icaveanswers can you discuss the iPad X leaks/rumors? What do you think the cost will be for the base 64GB and 256 WiFi models?
This is a really weird rumour, though by all accounts it seems legitimate - so here’s what we’re hearing - the 10th Generation iPad is likely to keep the same front panel, or at least almost the same, keeping the touchID home button and top and bottom bezels, but with the slimmer side bezels. When you move away from that face though, it’s going to basically look like it’s cosplaying as an iPad Air or Pro - getting the flat sides and back that we’ve been seeing in recent releases.
And next- HomePod - Mark Gurman is predicting not only an update, albeit not a huge one for the HomePod mini in 2023, but the return of the HomePod Nothing, with a new S8 processor and multitouch top display.
I’de be delighted if these updates either added mesh networking as I’ve discussed in the past - using those HomePods as access points boosting your wifi network around the home as well as being ready to play music and acting as a HomeKit hub. It just makes sense that these devices, being spread around different rooms in the home would make a great system for covering the whole home.
Mark also talks again of future products that include a combination HomePod with a camera and display for FaceTime calls - which honestly sounds to me more like an iPad with nice speakers, and an iPad on a robot arm with HomePod speakers. That sounds terrifying.

#iCaveAnswers Rumors say, that A16 is only a minor upgrade from A15. If M3 is based on A16, a node shrink from 5 to 3 nm would make it possible to put more cores onto each die and/or run at higher clock speeds. But it would be the 3rd CPU with basically the same performance cores. Do you think M3 will have some additional tricks on its sleeve? E.g. again faster efficiency, GPU, neural engine or media cores, an additional display driver & Thunderbolt 4 support on the base M3 etc.?

Enjoy your vacation! We're about to head out for one ourselves. :) I may have missed you talking about this, but there has been a lot of shade thrown at the M2 MBA for being aimed at consumers and not performing sustained pro-level tasks as well as the MacBook Pro models. Do you think the M2 MBA is a worthy upgrade for the M1 MBA? #iCaveAnswers?
