Dark matter is a form of matter that does not interact with light or any other form of electromagnetic radiation, making it invisible to telescopes and other instruments that detect light. It is believed to make up about 27% of the total mass-energy in the universe and provides the gravitational force that holds galaxies and galaxy clusters together. Scientists have inferred the existence of dark matter through its gravitational effects on visible matter, such as stars and gas in galaxies. Dark energy, on the other hand, is a hypothetical form of energy that is thought to permeate all of space and drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. It is believed to make up about 68% of the total mass-energy in the universe. Dark energy is thought to have a negative pressure, which causes it to act like a repulsive force that counteracts gravity and causes the expansion of the universe to accelerate. The existence of dark energy was first inferred from observations of distant supernovae in the late 1990s, and its properties are still being studied by scientists today.
