In this video, I took Elon (Takeuchi TB290) down near the beaver ponds and widened the sediment collecting swale, and transferred the soil to the blueberry plot and to the nursery area.

Tarps used on the farm. Recently Conner Crickmore posted a video with the title "Popular Farming Methods I DON'T Use - But I get asked about a lot" In that video Conner explains why he doesn't use tarps on his farm. I also discuss how Jean-Martin Fortier in his book and in his videos has been a proponent of occultation using tarps on his very successful farms.

We have been using weed mats in our permanent raised bed garden for over a decade. Despite the challenges associated with these mats, we continue to rely on them. Here are some benefits and challenges of using weed mats:
Benefits of Weed Mats
Weed Suppression: Weed mats effectively block sunlight, preventing weed seeds from germinating and reducing the need for manual weeding.
Soil Moisture Retention: By reducing evaporation, weed mats help retain soil moisture, which can reduce the frequency of watering.
Soil Temperature Regulation: Weed mats can help maintain more stable soil temperatures, protecting plant roots from extreme temperature fluctuations.
Erosion Control: They help prevent soil erosion by stabilizing the soil surface, especially during heavy rains.
Reduced Use of Herbicides: Weed mats minimize the need for chemical herbicides, promoting a more environmentally friendly gardening practice.
Improved Plant Growth: With fewer weeds competing for nutrients and water, the main plants can grow more vigorously.
Challenges of Weed Mats
Soil Health Impact: Weed mats can limit the natural movement of air and water into the soil, potentially affecting soil health and microbial activity.
Maintenance Issues: Over time, soil, organic matter, and weed seeds can accumulate on top of the weed mat, leading to weed growth on the mat itself.
Initial Cost: High-quality weed mats can be expensive to install, especially for large garden areas.
Durability Concerns: Depending on the material, weed mats can degrade over time, requiring replacement or repairs.
Petroleum-Based Materials: Many weed mats are made from petroleum-based products, which are not environmentally sustainable and can contribute to pollution.
Aesthetic Concerns: Some gardeners find that weed mats can detract from the natural appearance of their garden beds.
Additional Considerations
Weeds Growing Through Weed Mats: If precautions are not taken, weeds can grow through the weed mats. For example, placing plants in pots, stones, or other items on the weed mats allows weed seeds to set their roots on and then grow through the mats. It is essential to keep the surface of the weed mats clean and free of debris.
Regular Maintenance: We recommend using a battery-operated leaf blower regularly to remove any debris that accumulates on the weed mats. This helps prevent weed seeds from germinating and ensures the mats remain effective.
Despite these challenges, we continue to use weed mats because their benefits in terms of weed control, moisture retention, and overall plant health outweigh the drawbacks in our gardening practices.

Recently I posted a winter walk in our 1st food forest and today I decided to take two cameras and walk the second food forest. This is only a few years old and I much different than the first food forest. We also grow garlic and horseradish in this food forest and this is the area that we do most of our composting. The system is still being constructed so there is a lot more work to be done. However, I thought that I should start showing videos during the winter as well as the phases of construction.

Today I used MiniMe to smooth the surface of the ground and pick up rocks in the 3rd food forest. We have a rain forecast for the next few days so I need to get the cover crop seed down. The seed mix includes wheat, Austrian winter peas, triticale, forage collards, hairy vetch, daikon radish, Persian clover, yellow mustard, and balansa clover (nitrogen-fixed).
