It has become a tradition with the Cigar Coop Coalition coverage that on the morning of Day 4 of the Premium Cigar Association (PCA) we will have our visit with Steve Saka of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. Saka is always generous with his time, and the visit becomes so much more than a recap of his new products. It mixes in a mini-recap of the trade show, a bit of the state of the industry, a bit of the state of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, and lots of other pearls of wisdom both related to cigars and not related to cigars. It has customarily been our longest interview of the Trade Show and 2022 was no exception. Therefore, in this PCA Report, we present 33 Minutes with Steve Saka.
As for the products, while some might say this was a quiet year for Saka as most of the products showcased were limited production, in a way there is no quiet year for Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust.

It's been 13 years since Bill Paley resurrected the brand created by his grandfather Samuel Paley, La Palina. Over the years Paley has teamed up with some of the best factories in the world in many different countries to produce his products. While La Palina's history is often associated with the brands of his grandfather, Bill Paley is now carving his own place in history with his brand. This year, while there wasn't a new brand, there were some exciting projects that returned - and other exciting projects that were tweaked.

From the 2021 PCA Trade Show, we talk to Reinier Lorenzo of HVC Cigars.
Reinier Lorenzo's HVC Cigars is a company that has quietly gone from one of the best kept secrets to one of the hottest small companies in the premium cigar business. Because for a while it was a company that flew under the radar, many were surprised that 2021 marks HVC's tenth anniversary. At this year's trade show the company introduced a distinct cigar that features a special tobacco to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, HVC also introduced a line extension to its Hot Cake line called Gran Cañon - marking HVC's first 60-ring gauge cigar.

Last week, came news of Micallef Cigars and All Saints Cigars uniting their sales teams into a single unit. Tonight we will bring in the two principals involved with making this deal happen: Dan Thompson, President of Micallef Cigars and Micky Pegg, co-owner of All Saints Cigars. We will discuss how this arrangement came to be, what this arrangement actually entails, and what the future holds here.
Plus, we will have our Cattle Baron Steak Question of the Night, Tabacalera USA Ties That Bind, Alec Bradley Live True, Espinosa Today in Sports History, and the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Deliberation segments.
Coming in at #16 is the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel. The Pledge is the third installment of E.P. Carrillo's Family Series line. It's most famous because it was the second cigar on this line to capture Cigar Aficionado's #1 Cigar of the Year. The name Pledge is meant to be a homage to all cigar smokes. it was actually chosen from input from consumers who visited the E.P. Carrillo booth at Cigar Aficionado’s 2019 Big Smoke Las Vegas event.
The E.P. Carrillo Pledge is highlighted by a Connecticut Havana wrapper. Company founder Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr is known for working with Ecuadorian Sumatra and Connecticut Broadleaf, and in recent years we’ve seen him use this wrapper many times. It's been used on releases for Crowned Heads (Four Kicks Maduro, Mule Kick LE 2018 and on E.P. Carrillo’s Original Rebel Rebellious and TAA Exclusive 2018 cigars. As for the remainder of the blend, it features an Ecuadorian binder and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The Prequel is a classic 5 x 50 box-pressed Robusto. The cigar is produced at Perez-Carrillo's Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic.
Flavor-wise, the E.P. Carrillo Pledge Prequel delivers notes of coffee, licorice, black cherry, wood, and pepper. This is a cigar where the flavors are in the medium/medium to full range throughout the smoking experience. These flavors are countered by medium strength.
This is the eighth year since the Countdown was launched in 2010 that E.P. Carrillo has secured a spot on one. This cigar also gives the Dominican Republic its second cigar on the 2021 Countdown.
