Attempted aggravated rape charges against Louisiana man Vincent Simmons have been dropped. freeing him from prison after 44 years. CNN reports. In 1977. Simmons. 24. was accused of attempting to sexually assault two white twin girls. Karen and Sharon Sanders. who were 14 years old. A jury decision of 11 white men and one Black woman found him guilty. According to a CBS News report. the women reported the incident to a sheriff saying they were kidnapped by a Black man. taken to a country road and sexually assaulted for three hours in a car that belonged to their cousin. Keith Laborde. who allegedly was locked inside the trunk. Attorney Justin Bonus filed a motion for Simmons’ release. claiming there was no forensic evidence to connect him to the crime. The women still stood by their accusations years later. “We’re tired. We want it behind us. He went in guilty. he’s still guilty and he’ll die guilty.” said the sisters. via KALB. However. both of them did not give his name to identify him as the suspect. per CBS. Sharon Sanders told David Begnaud from “CBS Mornings” that Simmons allegedly told the girls his name the night of the incident but the women didn’t provide any other details in the report besides Simmons’ race. More pieces of evidence suggested a conflict in the facts of the incident. per the CBS report. A photo of Simmons in a lineup showed him wearing handcuffs to which the women insisted Simmons was not in handcuffs when they picked him out. Additionally. Bonus. Laborde’s cousin. Dana Brouilette said Laborde admitted Simmons did not rape the women. Brouilette also said it was Laborde who allegedly raped one of the women. Avoyelles Parish District Attorney Charles Riddle III dismissed Simmons’ charges claiming while there was sufficient evidence to keep Simmons behind bars he did not want the victims to re experience their trauma in a retrial. per CNN. “Just in case anyone has any doubt. no this is not a declaration of innocence at all. We attempted to free him months ago because he has served enough time. Let this case be put to bed and the victims free from suffering again.” said Riddle via CNN.

'Freedom Convoy' president Tamara Lich said in a letter to Watson. adding that the 'Freedom Convoy' board agrees with the request to alleviate pressure on residential areas and that organizers are currently working to get the truckers to 'buy in.' Opinion: Why gold isn’t likely to be a safe haven for your money if Russia invades Ukraine
Gold is rallying now but don’t be surprised to see prices fall if Russia invades Ukraine. That’s because the price of gold GC00. +1.68% usually declines in the wake of geopolitical crises. Investors betting on gold because of the Ukrainian crisis should re examine their assumptions. Perhaps the closest historical precedent to the current crisis was Russia’s annexation of Crimea in late February 2014. A month after Russia sent soldiers into Crimea. gold bullion was 3% lower than where it stood the day before. Three months later. the price of gold was 5.8% lower than before the invasion. That crisis constitutes just one data point. but gold’s experience is consistent with my analysis of gold’s reaction to other geopolitical crises. Consider the list that appeared in a recent MarketWatch article on how the stock market typically reacts to such crises. The table below reports the percentage of time gold declined in the wake of the dozen crises on the list that have occurred since the early 1970s. which is when gold began trading freely in the U.S. Given that there are only a dozen crises in this sample. the percentages shown in the table are insignificantly different from 50%. That means that our best bet is that gold’s direction in the wake of a crisis is largely a matter of a coin flip. Gold as a stock market hedge The same conclusion emerges when we approach the...

Rooting for root causes: In the wake of Christina Lee’s horrific murder. politicians engage in facile blame shifting
After the brutal Chinatown murder of Christina Yuna Lee. some pols are not only insisting that society failed Lee. but asserting that it failed the man accused of stabbing her more than 40 times. They should bite their tongues. Sunday evening. as details were still emerging about the morning’s crime. Councilwoman Julie Won definitively declared that “this tragedy is the result of our city’s failed social service policies which doesn’t (sic.) offer real solutions to a lack of safe housing and treatment for those suffering mental illness. We need comprehensive mental health care with safe & accessible housing to prevent incidents.” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said that “our broken mental health system must be fixed.” New York indeed fails to deliver timely treatment to thousands with serious mental illness. a small fraction of whom turn violent. Given all those who’ve fallen through its cracks over the years. the system is guilty until proven innocent. But neither Won. Levine nor others leaping to conclusions knew then — nor do we know now — whether 25 year old Assamad Nash was indeed failed by a frayed mental health safety net. We do know he was homeless. and that in late September. while selling swipes in the Grand St. subway station. he allegedly punched commuter David Elliot in the face after Elliot swiped a friend through the turnstile. After that vicious act. which resulted in a misdemeanor assault charge. he was granted supervised release in advance of an upcoming court appearance. (Transparently. that supervision failed. as it does in too many other cases.) Under laws reformed in 2019 and 2020. bail could have been set but wasn’t. Had Nash been assessed by mental health professionals at one of his many brushes with the law — and he should’ve been if he showed signs of psychosis — perhaps he would have been properly diagnosed. Perhaps safe and accessible housing could somehow have rid him of the desire to hurt others. though that’s a stretch. To leap to root cause conclusions is no better than reflexively blaming an act of violence on bail reform or racism to try to turn a human tragedy into a political opportunity. What we know now is that a man who seemed to have free will violently stalked and murdered a woman. Focus on that for a bit.

US small donors help fuel Canadian 'Freedom Convoy.' GiveSendGo confirms
The 'Freedom Convoy' of Canadian truckers that have been peacefully protesting in their country for weeks over the government's COVID 19 vaccine mandates have received significant support from Americans. according to the crowdfunding site currently facilitating donations to the group. GiveSendGo says it is still running the numbers. but it confirmed to FOX Business on Tuesday that it estimates roughly half the donations it has collected to help the group came from small donations made from the U.S. ‘THIS IS CANADA IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE A FREE COUNTRY'. BRIDGE BLOCKADE PROTESERS SPEAK OUT AFTER POLICE MOVE IN The confirmation comes after a hacker took over GiveSendGo's site over the weekend and posted a purported list of 93.000 donors to the Freedom Convoy's cause. along with a manifesto condemning the Christian crowdfunding site and the Canadian truckers. No credit card details were leaked. GiveSendGo co founder and CFO Jacob Wells told FOX Business that he could not confirm the validity of the entire distribution list being circulated at this point. but said prior to the hack it did appear that there was 'a pretty even split between donations coming from Canada and donations coming from the U.S..' and that 'the average donation was quite small – less than $100.' GiveSendGo became the fundraising platform for the truckers after competitor GoFundMe shut down a fundraising page for the Freedom Convoy on its own site a few weeks ago. when donations surpassed more than $10 million. ‘HE JUST GAINED MORE FREEDOM FIGHTERS’: TRUCKERS REACT TO TRUDEAU INVOKING EMERGENCIES ACT Derek Brouwer. a Canadian trucker and part of the convoy. told FOX Business that while he can't speak to the numbers. he has received an outpouring of support from Americans he does business with from Florida. New Mexico. and Georgia. He said a handful of them call him regularly. saying. 'We're really vouching for you. we're praying for you guys.' and that it's encouraging. 'We don't know what our expense is going to be on this.' Brouwer said. talking about the impact on drivers who are part of the Freedom Convoy. 'But I've already had someone basically say. 'if they take your truck. I'll buy you a new one.'' Brouwer says he's never lived in the U.S.. so he doesn't 'know why. exactly.' Americans are being so supportive of the Freedom Convoy's cause. but thinks it has to do with 'the restriction thing.' adding that 'it really bothers them down there.' 'They don't have nearly the restrictions we have. but that's because I think they're a little more independent than we are as [individuals].' he told FOX Business. saying he believes the protest has brought Americans and Canadians closer together.

Eminem takes a knee. hip hop makes history during star studded Super Bowl LVI halftime show
West Coast. make some noise! California knows how to party. so this weekend. when Super Bowl LVI came to Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium. where the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23 20. L.A.’s finest finally made history with — incredibly — the big game’s first ever hip hop headlined halftime show. During an NFL press conference held Thursday. Dr. Dre. one of the most influential and successful rappers. producers. and moguls in all of music. emphatically declared: “This should’ve happened a long time ago. Hip hop is the biggest genre of music on the planet right now. so it’s crazy that it took all of this time for us to be recognized. I think we’re going to go on and do a fantastic show. and we’re going to do it so big that they can’t deny us anymore in the future.” The underwhelming staging on the SoFi field — a Los Angeles city grid of chalk white buildings. with performers stationed in different portable discos in some sort of socially distanced. futuristic block party. and Dre overseeing much of the spectacle from behind a space age mixing console desk — admittedly didn’t fully translate to the small screen. It wasn’t quite big enough to fulfill Dre’s promise. However. the star power made up for that. Pretty much anyone on Sunday’s bill — N.W.A. pioneer Dre and his West Coast protégés Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. queen of...

The attempted murder of mayor hopeful Craig Greenberg is a reckoning moment for Louisville
Louisville. Kentucky. has become one of the most violent cities in America. So violent. in fact. that one of its most vocal gun control activists—a Black Lives Matter protestor who had been promoted by the local progressive establishment for years—attempted to murder a Democratic candidate for mayor on Valentine’s Day. Quintez Brown. age 21. opened fire at close range on candidate Craig Greenberg at his campaign office. A bullet tore through Greenberg’s clothing as his staff scrambled to barricade the door; it was a miracle no one was killed. Brown was charged with attempted murder and wanton endangerment. The shooting is but the latest instance of political violence in America. where activists take their grievances to unacceptable extremes. And it’s another case where we are all need to be honest about what happened. For such a young person. Brown had lived a very public life. He wrote for his college paper and The Courier Journal. He appeared on MSNBC. He met several progressive luminaries. like Barack Obama. Al Sharpton and Kentucky Senate candidate Charles Booker. He was showered with attention and. somewhere along the way. taught to deeply mistrust Republicans. white people and institutions. And that he would be rewarded with more attention if he eloquently expressed those views. “Where I come from…it’s like a war zone.” Brown told MSNBC’s Joy Reid in 2018 when talking about the kind of gun violence that he would later participate in. “Kentucky's concealed carry law shows your life doesn't matter to gun loving Republicans.” blared a headline on a 2019 piece carried on these pages. Another headline read: “Quit asking whether white men are racists and instead just hold them accountable.” In 2020. Brown again found himself in the spotlight when Black Lives Matter protests and unrest paralyzed downtown Louisville for months. Brown was right in the middle of it. one the most visible and media friendly activists. In 2021. Brown disappeared for two weeks. prompting a media manhunt as the local reporters who promoted him constantly tweeted and wrote about his disappearance. Rumors circulated that he had been killed by police. He was eventually located on a park bench in New York City. Brown reemerged in 2022. running for local office and apparently drifting toward even more radical politics than before. The Daily Beast reported that Brown had been meeting recently with a Black nationalist organization with a long history of antisemitic views. We don’t know for sure what led Brown to shoot at Greenberg. a prominent figure in Louisville’s Jewish community. but it is fair to ask whether this was a hate crime. Is it any wonder that
