Ep. 5205 – Stephen Zunes on Biden’s Sponsorship of the Invasion of Iraq – 3/12/2020
Stephen Zunes talks about Joe Biden’s shameful history helping to advocate for the invasion of Iraq in 2002 and 2003. These days he claims he was caught up in the aftermath of 9/11 and was simply mistaken about the intelligence, like everyone else who voted for the war. But Zunes reminds us that Biden was chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at that time, with a Democratic-majority congress. With his influence, he probably could have stopped the war singlehandedly. If that weren’t enough, Zunes says that Biden was actually advocating “boots on the ground” to depose Saddam Hussein before 9/11. On this issue alone, Biden should be disqualified from the presidency, and Zunes and Scott expect a poor showing in the general election, should he end up with the Democratic nomination.

Scott interviews Jeremy Hammond about the real history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, focusing on the fact that, counter to the mainstream narrative, Israel has encouraged the rise of Hamas all along as a useful foil. Israel, Hammond explains, has never wanted a two-state solution, and when the PLO renounced terrorism and openly began supporting the idea of a two-state solution in the late 1980s, Hamas provided a convenient excuse for Israel to claim it couldn't negotiate with the Palestinians at all. Hammond also refutes the claim that the Palestinians have repeatedly refused to negotiate peaceful settlements to the conflict, by going through all the supposed deals that they turned down.

Scott interviews Doug Bandow about the U.S. relationship to Ukraine, perhaps the perfect case study in America's foreign policy arrogance. Ukraine, of course, has very little direct strategic relevance to daily life in America—and yet the U.S. government considers Ukraine one of its closest allies. In practice, what this means is that the United States would have to be prepared to go to war with Russia on Ukraine's behalf, if there were a sufficiently severe provocation. But as Bandow points out, this is an absolutely crazy policy: Russia, remember, has nuclear weapons, and any war between nuclear-armed countries would at some point be liable to go nuclear. And so when it comes down to it, the American government is potentially risking human life on planet earth over a single alliance with a small country halfway around the world.
