Navigating Money Differences in Marriage: A Journey of Growth & Understanding | (Part IV) Rina Hicks
Money often gets a bad rap for causing divorces, even more than issues like sex or infidelity. In my case, my husband and I have had to navigate this tricky terrain. He's a planner, incredibly organized – seriously, he's the most organized person I know, and I thank God for him. It wasn't always smooth sailing because, well, I'm a dreamer.
You see, there are these things called money personalities, and I stumbled upon the work of a psychologist named Olivia Mellan. Back in 1984, she released a book based on her counseling couples, and guess what she found? Finances were the top issue in marriages. Reading her book was an eye-opener for me. It made me realize that the challenges I was facing in my marriage with money had a lot to do with our different backgrounds.
My husband and I come from entirely different worlds, and it reflects in our money attitudes. The beauty, though, is that these differences allow us to bring unique strengths into our relationship. It took some time to adjust, but we've not only made progress, we continue to do so.
Here's a nugget of hope for couples out there: yes, we're different, but that's okay. The key is to understand and empathize with your partner. Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Acknowledge and appreciate the strengths your partner brings to the table, especially when it comes to money matters. It's real, it's challenging, but it's also a journey of growth and understanding.
