Harpal Brar, Chairman of the CPGB-ML speaks on the significance of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Victory over Fascism.
Much is written and spoken about WW1 and WW2 - yet it is truly staggering how few people, an particularly how few British Workers, really understand the causes and significance of this struggle, in which 60 million workers gave their lives.
The imperialists (Britain, France, USA, Germany, Japan...) fought, and many millions died to preserve and enforce the wage and colonial slavery of the capitalist class. They fought for slaves and booty and nothing more.
And yet by their masterful leadership, bold strategy and heroic courage and self-sacrifice, the Soviet Union and international communist movement, won world-historic victories which not only preserved their hard won socialist nation, but brought into being a swath of socialist democracies across Europe and Asia, invigorated the anti-colonial struggle, and decisively shifted the balance of power in favour of working people on a global scale.
The victories won by the Soviet Union changed and shaped our world, and all workers should not only know these episode in our history, but we should be truly proud of these earth shattering achievements made by our class, which herald the bright new world we are capable of bringing into being.
This presentation should be compulsory viewing for every British Citizen, and every worker world-wide: help spread the word!
” The bourgeoisie turns everything into a commodity, hence also the writing of history. It is a part of its being, of its condition for existence, to falsify all goods; it falsified the writing of history. And the best-paid historiography is that which is falsified for the purposes of the bourgeoisie.” (Engels, ‘Material for the History of Ireland’, 1870).
This shrewd observation of Engels should be kept in mind when judging:
(i) the causes of the Second World War
(ii) the events leading up to it
(iii) the role in it of the Soviet Union, on the one hand, and the imperialist camp, on the other hand, and
(iv) the results of the war.
The Second, as indeed the First, World War is inseparable from imperialism, whose product it was. Tens of millions of people were slaughtered to decide which set of bandits – the Anglo-American-French or the German-Italian-Japanese – was to get what share of the loot.
The only way out of the morass of imperialist wars is socialism; therefore the struggle against war must be inseparably connected with the struggle for the overthrow of imperialism and the establishment of socialism.
The ruling classes of the ‘democratic’ imperialist countries were complicit in the rise and strengthening of fascism. It was the crowning achievement of the Soviet people to have defeated Nazism

Grenfell Tower, June 2017 - A poem by Ben Okri
It was like a burnt matchbox in the sky.
It was black and long and burnt in the sky.
You saw it through the flowering stump of trees.
You saw it beyond the ochre spire of the church.
You saw it in the tears of those who survived.
You saw it through the rage of those who survived.
You saw it past the posters of those who had burnt to ashes.
You saw it past the posters of those who jumped to their deaths.
You saw it through the TV images of flames through windows
Running up the aluminium cladding
You saw it in print images of flames bursting out from the roof.
You heard it in the voices loud in the streets.
You heard it in the cries in the air howling for justice.
You heard it in the pubs the streets the basements the digs.
You heard it in the wailing of women and the silent scream
Of orphans wandering the streets
Those who were living now are dead
Those who were breathing are from the living earth fled.
If you want to see how the poor die, come see Grenfell Tower.
See the tower, and let a world-changing dream flower.
Residents of the area call it the crematorium.
It has revealed the undercurrents of our age.
The poor who thought voting for the rich would save them.
The poor who believed all that the papers said.
The poor who listened with their fears.
The poor who live in their rooms and dream for their kids.
The poor are you and I, you in your garden of flowers,
In your house of books, who gaze from afar
At a destiny that draws near with another name.
Sometimes it takes an image to wake up a nation
From its secret shame. And here it is every name
Of someone burnt to death, on the stairs or in their room,
Who had no idea what they died for, or how they were betrayed.
They did not die when they died; their deaths happened long
Before. It happened in the minds of people who never saw
Them. It happened in the profit margins. It happened
In the laws. They died because money could be saved and made.
They called the tower ugly; they named it an eyesore.
All around the beautiful people in their beautiful houses
Didn’t want the ugly tower to ruin their house prices.
Ten million was spent to encase the tower in cladding.
Had it ever been tested before except on this eyesore,
Had it ever been tested for fire, been tried in a blaze?
But it made the tower look pretty, yes it made the tower look pretty.
But in twenty four storeys, not a single sprinkler.
In twenty four storeys not a single alarm that worked.
In twenty four storeys not a single fire escape,
Only a single stairwell designed in hell, waiting
For an inferno. That’s the story of our times.
Make it pretty on the outside, but a death trap
On the inside. Make the hollow sound nice, make
The empty look nice. That’s all they will see,
How it looks,

Harpal Brar outlines the true history of the origins of Zionism, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.
Zionism, he attests, is not a jewish project; it is an imperialist construct -- an instrument to perpetuate imperialist domination of the middle east. Its main purpose is to ensure continued imperialist control of the region's oil and gas reserves.
The zionist state of Israel is a dagger aimed at the heart of the Arab people's revolutionary-democratic movement. At the same time it has subjugated mentally a large proportion of the world's jews -- people who were formerly to be found in the front ranks of every democratic and socialist movement.
Owing to the suppression of the historical truth about zionism, the wider masses, including the jewish masses, are unaware of the true nature of this pernicious ideology, which is racist, antisemitic and reactionary to its core.
As the malformed offspring of imperialist intrigues and crazed zionist ideology, the artificially constructed Israeli state is bound to collapse under the weight of its own internal contradictions. As a colonial enterprise that appeared at a time when colonialism was already well past its sell-by date, Israel is bound to collapse through the resistance the Palestinian masses and the fatigue brought upon the jewish settler population by endless warfare.
This presentation is based upon the pamphlet written by Harpal for the CPGB-ML, which is our small contribution to exposing and defeating this vicious tool of imperialism.

Ella Rule gives a short, amusing and informative talk, about the recent history of the 'Women's movement' in Britain.
Addressing a meeting to Mark international Women's day, held by the CPGB-ML and Red Youth in Birmingham, on 8 March 2014, she outlines why working class women have not been involved in the women's movement - because it has not addressed their needs.
Speaking from her experience, and with reference in particular to the 1972 women's conference held in Skegness, which she and her comrades attended, she illustrates how a potentially progressive and liberating movement was effectively hijacked and side-tracked by a number of petty-bourgeois groups who pushed their false, anti-men, anti-worker, anti-social(ist) and anti-marxist views on the movement that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, effectively destroying it.
She prefaces her remarks by noting that Women have everything to gain by pursuing the path of socialism, and the overthrow of the capitalist system, that exploits the majority, divides them and gives them a life of servitude, in the interests of fabulous super-profits of an insignificant handful (of men predominantly, but a few of the few are, in fact, women) - the finance capitalists.
How can real equality and liberation be won by working women? By liberating humanity from the system of wage slavery.

Mandeep, a young organiser of the Grenwich & Bexley branch of the Indian Workers' Association, pays tribute to Godfrey Andries Cremer, Scientist, Teacher, lifelong communist and founding member of the CPGB-ML. He is remembered as an example and guiding light by a generation of young communists who knew him and learned from his example.
This and other contributions were made at a memorial meeting held in April 2012, attended by many of his closest friends, family and comrades, who packed into Saklatvala Hall to share our sorrow at Godfrey's passing and our joy that he has enriched our lives.
Despite our sadness, it was an inspiring and uplifting celebration of the 50 selfless and meaningful years Godfrey devoted to the finest cause in all the world - the fight for the liberation of mankind.
Godfrey's deep love for humanity, his profound marxist understanding, and his determination to use all his talent to serve the working class by building a truly revolutionary movement dedicated to their emancipation from wage slavery, and a communist party capable of directing that struggle, were his consistent motivating forces, and his enduring legacy.
It was this higher cause and meaning that enabled him to harness his creative powers and live an outstanding and exemplary life; a life full of passion and joy, free of black despair and wasted, petty and meaningless years.
Godfrey faced his final moments with the same optimism and fortitude that characterized his life. His abiding certainty was that his life's work was a great gift to humanity - and we salute him for it.

Dr Ranjeet Brar, our member and a consultant surgeon in the NHS discusses the question of poaching of Nurses from west Africa - where there are just 0.9 qualified nurses per 1,000 of the population, and bringing them to Britain (where there are 10 times as many nurses per 1000 population) to fill shortages of workers to plug the gaps in an NHS system that is being bled by privatisation and underfunding.
It is not individuals who are to blame. It is natural for workers to try and better their lives, pay and conditions. It is the imperialist system itself, built upon the past crimes of colonialism, that has created and sustains the great economic divide between the wealthy exploiting nations and the impoverished majority of exploited - “the global south”.
The struggle against imperialism is the common cause of workers of all countries and the only answer to our shared problems. It is imperative to fight racism and for unity of action in this world embracing struggle.
